The Saints interviewed Denver Broncos runningbacks coach Bobby
Turner today, the latest candidate the Saints are interviewing
in an attempt to replace
departed offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy.
Turner has been with the Broncos for the past decade, molding
back after back into Pro Bowl players. Under his watch, Terrell
Davis, Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, Clinton Portis, and this past
year Reuben Droughns all benefited from Turner's presence. Even
at Ohio State in 1990 former Viking star Robert Smith became an
excellent back under Turner's eye.
Regarded as one of the best in the business, Turner teamed with
another top-notch position coach on the offensive line in Alex
Gibbs, and offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, for several years,
and the Broncos running game was successful regardless of who
was under center. Turner's mastery of the personnel and strategy
needed for the power running game is why the Saints are interested
in the veteran coach, who had 20 years as a collegiate assistant
before joining Mike Shanahan in Denver in 1995.
Turner, who is on the sidelines with a headset on Sundays for
the Broncos, has been an offensive coordinator at the collegiate
level with Purdue, but has not held that high a position in the
NFL yet.
After losing out on Marc Trestman and Terry Robiskie, largely
because they have better and richer opportunities elsewhere, the
Saints will formally interview quarterbacks coach Mike Sheppard
this week although he is not considered a strong candidate for
the job. Sheppard was interviewed for the offensive coordinator
opening in Baltimore earlier this offseason.
As always keep here at NOPF for the latest.
