The failed attempt to find a strong-legged placekicker
with a sixth-round pick in a trade from Miami has ended.
K Olindo Mare, 34, who failed his offseason physical with the
Saints today, was released from his contract.
Mare missed 7 of 17 field goal attempts, including 2 from inside
40 yards, but connected on all 34 extra point attempts in 13 games
over 2007. Mare was acquired under the premise that he was one
of the NFL's strongest legs, especially on kickoffs, to replace
aging veteran John Carney.
Carney connected on 12 of 14 field goals and 27 of 28 extra points
with two teams in 2007, signing with the Jaguars and then the
Chiefs during the season.
Mare's release comes a week after the Saints re-signed K Martin
Gramatica, who replaced an injured Mare in Week 14 of 2007 on
the Saints roster. Mare suffered a season-ending hip injury last
December.
Gramatica was perfect on five attempts during the final three
weeks of the season.
The Saints traded a sixth round pick in April 2007's draft to
Miami for Mare.
