TE Billy Miller

Miller In The Fold: The Saints have re-signed tight end Billy Miller to a one-year contract, preventing him from hitting the free agent market that opens in less than 48 hours.

Miller's 14 catches for 129 yards came in 10 games. The Saints added him as their tight end depth chart was turned upside down midseason. The Saints placed starting TE Ernie Conwell on injured reserve and cut third stringer Nate Lawrie to make room for other needs. TE Mark Campbell was the only tight end to make it through the season for the Saints, and even he was limited by knee injuries and missed two games.

The 6'3, 245 pound Miller started three games, and half of his 14 catches went for first downs. The former USC product is with his fourth team, having bounced from Denver to Houston to Cleveland before landing in New Orleans. He was with the Saints in training camp but was cut after preseason.

Conwell Cut: In an expected move, the Saints cut starting TE Ernie Conwell, whose Saints career has been plagued with injury. The former Ram caught eight passes for 57 yards and a touchdown as a Saint in 2006, his fourth year as a Saint. He played only 34 games through four seasons, catching 57 passes for 614 yards and 5 TD's.

Horn Decision Looming: The Saints will make a decision on Joe Horn soon, possibly by Friday, possibly not until mid-March when his roster bonus is due.

Same goes for veteran CB Fred Thomas.

The difference between the two is that it is believed Horn can still play at a high level, while Thomas' problems we exposed as the season wound down. Thomas' play wasn't awful and it isn't fair to pick on him just for getting beat in playoffs by Bernard Berrian and Donte Stallworth, two of the best deep threats in the league.

Horn will also likely get snapped up within hours of being released, should the Saints decide to do so. All three of the Saints' NFC South opponents would love to convert a thorn in their side to a thorn in the Saints' side.

Stallworth Decision Looming: The Eagles locked up Reggie Brown to a big contract but seem all but set on letting the former Saint WR Donte Stallworth head out the door via free agency, where competition for the speedster's services will be heavy.

A condition of Stallworth's trade was that the draft pick would escalate to a third for the Saints if the Eagles signed Stallworth to a new contract. If that doesn't happen, the Saints will get the Eagles' fourth round pick.

Earlier this week, the Saints wrapped up the product of another New Orleans-Philadelphia trade, DT Hollis Thomas, to a new four-year deal.

Laurels from Laureus: European sporting organization Laureus has nominated Saints QB Drew Brees for their World Comeback of the Year award, along with golfer Ben Curtis, boxer Roy Jones Jr, the Miami Heat of the NBA, tennis pro Serena Williams, and French soccer captain Zinedine Zidane. Curtis won two PGA events, his first wins since 2003. Jones Jr and Zidane returned from retirement, the Heat went down 0-2 in the finals before winning out for the 2006 NBA Title , and Williams won the Austrailian Open despite entering the tourney unranked.

Other nominations for awards include former LSU wide receiver Xavier Carter for World Breakthrough of the Year. Carter won four NCAA titles and recorded the second fastest 200m at age 20.

Winners will be announced April 2.

Voodoo Wilkerson: Our own Kenny Wilkerson will handle the play-by-play for the New Orleans Voodoo of the AFL in 2007, with a guest analyst every week that will be plucked from the Saints roster or front office. The games will be broadcast on Bayou 95.7 FM. Wilkerson and Voodoo coach Mike Neu will also host a weekly radio talk show on WWL 870AM.

Voodoo Roster Set: The last of the Voodoo's training camp moves was to place hometown product QB Danny Wimprine on injured reserve, putting the roster at league-mandated 24 players.
