Eager to get his contract out of the way before he leaves for
a USO Tour with QB Drew Brees next week, TE Billy Miller has officially
re-signed with the Saints.
Miller, 30, 6'3, 252, caught 27 passes for 328 yards and two
touchdowns in 2007, starting six games. All of Miller's catches
came after he became more involved in the offense in week 7.
The highlight of Miller's season was a breakaway 57-yard gain
against Jacksonville. The outstanding catch and run down to the
goal line set up a Brees-to-Bush touchdown on the next play, putting
the Saints up 17-10 in a game they would win 41-24. Miller had
another 36-yard gainer in Atlanta, which set up a Brees-to-Patten
score for the opening points of the Saints' 34-14 win.
While 2007 starter Eric Johnson remains on the open market without
a team, Miller and veteran Mark Campbell appear to be the Saints'
starting options at tight end, pending the NFL Draft.
The two give the Saints specialists at both talents of the position;
Miller the former USC wide receiver and Campbell the 6'6, 260
pound blocker.
Campbell, 32, remains under contract but missed the entire 2006
season because of a back problem. 2008 is the final year of his
contract.
Miller's contract, details unreleased, could mean that Johnson
will not return. Plagued by injury problems of his own, Johnson
started 12 games for the Saints in 2007, collecting 48 catches
for 378 yards and two touchdowns.
The Saints also have veteran Ronnie Ghent on the roster.
The Saints have yet to sign a free agent on offense, but have
re-signed eight of their own offensive free agents.
