MISSOURI (March 3rd) senior defensive back SHIRDONYA MITCHELL, who ran between 4.32 and 4.38 in the 40 at his Pro Day, was originally diagnosed with a possible sprained right knee after getting hurt in the three-cone drill... once the swelling went down he had an MRI that revealed that he actually suffered a torn ACL in his knee, which will require surgery and cost him the 2005 season... so any team that signs him will be forced to put him on the PUP list for his rookie campaign, but keep an eye on him once he is back to full-strength, as he lacked ideal experience at the position (former wide receiver), and would have likely spent most of his rookie year on someone's practice squad.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC (March 4th) senior linebacker/safety CHRIS LASKOWSKI has received additional attention from Jacksonville, Kansas City and Miami, since posting impressive numbers at his recent Pro Day.

NW MISSOURI STATE (March 7th) senior wide receiver/return man JAMAICA RECTOR did a full workout at the Combine, so he decided to stick with those results... senior defensive back GABE HELMS (#23) ran between 4.50 and 4.56 in the 40... 4.40/4.42 short shuttle... 7.12 three-cone... 35" vertical... 10'1" broad jump... also did 17 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5111, 221 pounds... was clearly the standout of the day... teams are evaluating him at both cornerback and safety... also shows some good special teams potential in terms of coverage units... several other senior prospects worked out, but are not considered NFL caliber.

SAN JOSE STATE (March 8th) senior defensive end/linebacker TONY FICKLIN ran between 4.72 and 4.76 in the 40... 39" vertical... also did 38 reps of 225 pounds... he weighed in at 6017, 268 pounds... did not run any shuttle times, as he suffered a slightly pulled hamstring... will workout again based on teams desire to see him do positional drills... being evaluated as both a 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB... pound-for-pound posted one of the best workouts of any potential pass rusher in terms of size, speed, strength numbers... senior offensive tackle WILLIAM OBENG ran between 5.48 and 5.51 in the 40... 5.17 short shuttle... 8.19 three-cone... 30 reps of 225 pounds... 7'11" broad jump... 29" vertical... he weighed in at 6060, 325 pounds... all times were run on FieldTurf... a total of 15 teams were in attendance for this Pro Day.

Dallas, San Diego, Cleveland, Denver and other teams moving or using 3-4 scheme seem to be taking a real liking to him... senior defensive tackle JASON JEFFERSON did 19 reps of 225 pounds... 31" vertical and 9'0" broad jump... had completed a full workout at the Combine... but he improved upon his scores in the areas that he did participate... senior linebacker/safety KAREEM TIMBERS ran 4.37/4.38 in the 40... 35" vertical... also did six reps of 225 pounds... he weighed in at 6030, 217 pounds... played outside linebacker in college, but several teams are looking at the idea of possibly converting him to safety, which is not a big stretch, since he was originally recruited to the school as a standout defensive back coming out of high school... his athleticism and special teams potential are what would have to initially carry him until he locates a true pro position for himsefl... Green Bay, Indianapolis, as well as the NY Giants and Cincinnati were impressed by his all-around results... but all teams plan to research his history of shoulder injuries... senior cornerback SCOTT STARKS ran between 4.32 and 4.38 in the 40... 6.93 three-cone... he weighed in at 5082, 172 pounds... senior linebacker/defensive end JONATHAN WELSH ran between 4.48 and 4.55 in the 40... he weighed in at 6031, 245 pounds... had done a full workout at the Combine... senior defensive tackle KALVIN BARRETT did 29 reps of 225 pounds... 29" vertical and did all of his positional drills... he weighed in at 6012, 320 pounds... some teams have also thought about evaluating him as an offensive guard... senior wide receiver DARRIN CHARLES ran between 4.60 and 4.62 in the 40... which was much better than his 4.75 estimate from last spring... 4.18 short shuttle... 6.96 three-cone... 36" vertical... did not bench press... caught the ball fairly well during the positional drills portion of his workout... he weighed in at 6063, 218 pounds... senior long snapper MATT KATULA did 16 reps of 225 pounds... 34" vertical... hit his target on 34-of-35 attempted snaps... his times ranged between .66 and .71... he weighed in at 6055, 280 pounds... senior defensive lineman DARIUS JONES did 20 reps of 225 pounds... 30" vertical... also looked pretty good during his positional drills... he weighed in at 6024, 295 pounds... sat out this past season to rehab a prior knee injury, but also had some previous off-field issues... senior cornerback CHUCKIE COWANS ran between 4.48 and 4.55 in the 40... 39" vertical... 10'6" broad jump... also did 12 reps of 225 pounds... he weighed in at 5082, 165 pounds... senior offensive tackle MORGAN DAVIS did 21 reps of 225 pounds... 31" vertical... senior offensive lineman MIKE LORENZ did 23 reps of 225 pounds... 31" vertical... he weighed in at 6044, 315 pounds... senior tight end TOM PACIOTTI did 21 reps of 225 pounds... he weighed in at 6040, 270 pounds... senior safety/return man JIM LEONHARD was still not able to workout for scouts, as he continues to rehab a stress fracture in his foot... there were at least 12 teams in attendance with Buffalo and Miami showing special attention to the workout, as Dolphins new head coach Nick Saban caught the workout in-person.

He is a native of the Los Angeles, California area, so it is possible he could be cleared for a number of events on the West Coast. Had four interceptions, as a senior, but could have grabbed another 4-to-6 with better hands. He is 6004, 194 pounds, and is related to standout NBA point guard Baron Davis. Please contact our staff if you have any opportunities for these players to workout.

VALPARAISO senior wide receiver ROB GIANCOLA and DRAKE (IA) senior wide receiver JASON JONES are both currently searching for a Pro Day workout location. Giancola was cleared to workout at Northwestern's first Pro Day, while Jones was cleared by school officials at Iowa State, but was turned down once he reached the event, as scouts told him he was not regionally eligible. Please contact our staff if you have any opportunities for these players to workout.

VIRGINIA TECH (March 24th) will also feature SAN JOSE STATE senior offensive guard OSMAR STAPLES, who will workout for scouts that day.

ALBANY, NY (March 28th) senior offensive lineman GEIR GUDMUNDSEN and senior linebacker/safety KURT CAMPBELL will both be working out at their Pro Day on March 28th... Gudmundsen has started to gain some additional attention, as position coaches have started to review his game films... as both the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys offensive line coaches are now scheduled to attend this Pro Day after seeing his tapes.

LSU (March 31st) senior defensive end MARCUS SPEARS (knee), senior cornerback COREY WEBSTER and senior center BEN WILKERSON (knee) all reported that they will attempt to workout for scouts at the school's second Pro Day on March 31st.

GEORGIA junior linebacker ODELL THURMAN has received additional interest from Green Bay, since the Combine.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES:

Former NORTH CAROLINA cornerback CHRISTOPHER HAWKINS, who transferred to MARSHALL before the start of this past season... is expected to become a standout defender for the Thundering Herd in 2005... has one-year of eligibility remaining, as he was dismissed last spring from UNC for violating unspecified team rules... was forced to sitout this past season, which is an NCAA requirement, but at 5096, 185 pounds with previous 40-times of between 4.36 and 4.40... he is expected to vie for All-MAC honors during his senior campaign.
