PRO DAY RESULTS (Up to March 19th):
SAN DIEGO STATE (March 19th) junior linebacker MATT MCCOY ran
between 4.55 and 4.60 in the 40... some had him faster (4.52)...
4.20 short shuttle... 7.03 three-cone... 11.70 60-yard... 33.5"
vertical... 9'7" broad jump and also did 19 reps of 225 pounds...
weighed in at 5116, 234 pounds... looked very athletic during
the positional drills portion of the workout... his shuttle drills,
like the rest of the players were done outside on wet/damp grass,
as he has routinely hit near 4.00 in the short shuttle and 6.80
three-cone times... had also done 36" vertical, while training...
spent 45 minutes interviewing with all/most of the 30 teams in
attendance... if you let your WLB roam free and make plays there
is not a better seek-and-destroy type linebacker available after
Derrick Johnson (Texas)... he needs to make better use of his
hands and get stronger at the POA... but he is likely to be the
highest player drafted that was not invited to the Combine...
senior safety JOSHUA DEAN ran between 4.62 and 4.68 in the 40...
3.98 short shuttle... 6.90 three-cone... 11.41 60-yard... 39.5"
vertical... 10'0" broad jump and also did 16 reps of 225
pounds... weighed in at 5117, 213 pounds... displayed better quickness
and athleticism than advertised in his drills... if healthy, he
has shown both FS and SS skills on his game films... also plays
faster than he times in the 40... should also show up well on
special teams... Atlanta and Miami paid close attention to his
workout... senior linebacker KIRK MORRISON ran between 4.72 and
4.78 in the 40... 4.28 short shuttle... 7.12 three-cone... 11.82
60-yard... 33" vertical... 9'6" broad jump... weighed
in at 6010, 234 pounds... senior safety MARVIEL UNDERWOOD ran
between 4.42 and 4.45 in the 40... 4.33 short shuttle... 7.08
three-cone... 38" vertical... 10'0" broad jump... weighed
in at 5102, 197 pounds... senior offensive tackle MIKE KRACALIK
ran between 5.23 and 5.38 in the 40... 4.64 short shuttle... 7.68
three-cone... 29.5" vertical... also did 20 reps of 225 pounds...
weighed in at 6080, 339 pounds... massive right tackle who has
over a 70" wingspan... better-athlete-than-advertised...
needs to work on his upper body strength... not a great finisher
on tape... his workout could earn him a late-round grade if not
he's a PFA with upside... senior wide receiver DEVIN PITTS ran
between 4.56 and 4.61 in the 40... 4.22 short shuttle... 6.86
three-cone... 11.63 60-yard... 34" vertical... 9'10"
broad jump... weighed in at 6024, 206 pounds... standout JC receiver
who was more of a possession-type receiver the past two years...
senior linebacker HEATH FARWELL ran between 4.54 and 4.61 in the
40... 4.43 short shuttle... 7.00 three-cone... 11.49 60-yard...
36" vertical... 9'9" broad jump... weighed in at 6001,
224 pounds... role player who split time, as they had a good deal
of OLB depth... has special teams upside... if not he will find
a nice home in the CFL.
NICHOLLS STATE (March 19th) senior running back COLT COLLETTI
ran between 4.46 and 4.48 in the 40... 6.90 three-cone... 39.5"
vertical... also did 33 reps of 225 pounds, which is the most
recorded/reported by any running back to date... weighs in at
5092, 215 pounds... three teams were in attendance for his workout,
Dallas, Green Bay and New Orleans.
SACRAMENTO STATE (March 18th) senior wide receiver/return man
FRED AMEY ran between 4.48 and 4.55 in the 40... some had him
with slower times... 4.12 short shuttle... 6.72 three-cone...
36" vertical... 9'2" broad jump and also did 20 reps
of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5101, 197 pounds... was a little
taller than advertised, but also has cut his 40-times down from
the 4.6 range... caught the ball very well at the East-West Shrine
Game practices... very tough for his size... kid also has great
intangibles and character... will also have to provide a spark
on special teams... has a real chance to leap frog a number of
highly-profiled receivers and come off the board in the late rounds.
MICHIGAN (March 18th) senior running back DAVID UNDERWOOD ran
between 4.49 and 4.57 in the 40... some had him as fast as 4.45...
31.5" vertical... 23 reps of 225 pounds... 4.28/4.40 short
shuttle... 7.31 three-cone... 9'6" broad jump... weighed
in at 5112, 227 pounds... senior offensive lineman DAVID BAAS
was satisfied with his results from the Combine, so he only did
positional drills... weighed in at 6044, 316 pounds... being equally
evaluated at both center and guard... has shown better movement
skills at both the Combine and Pro Day than he did during the
practices at the Senior Bowl... junior safety ERNEST SHAZOR, who
we reported on in Friday's update... also recorded 30" vertical...
10'1" broad jump and 19 reps of 225 pounds... he will try
to run the 40-yard dash and agility drills again sometime before
the draft if his hamstring allows it.
VANDERBILT (March 18th) senior wide receiver BRANDON SMITH, who
had been timed between 4.36 and 4.42 in the 40 at Tulane's Pro
Day... came back to run between 4.38 and 4.45 in the 40... also
caught passes, showing very good hands and impressing scouts once
again with his speed and routes... proving to be a Pro Day surprise,
as teams went in to view several other well-known prospects and
came out giving this kid a solid free agent grade... senior defensive
tackle MATT CLAY ran between 4.97 and 5.02 in the 40... 33 reps
of 225 pounds... 27" vertical... 7'10" broad jump...
weighed in at 6000, 312 pounds... showed good balance and agility
during his positional drills... shows up well on game film too.
TENNESSEE STATE (March 18th) senior running back CHARLES ANTHONY
ran between 4.60 and 4.66 in the 40... some had him with slower
times... 4.48 short shuttle... 7.52 three-cone... 35.5" vertical...
9'4" broad jump and also did 18 reps of 225 pounds... weighed
in at 5104, 202 pounds... has gained ten pounds, since the start
of his senior campaign... has usually timed in the late 4.6-to-early
4.7 range... and these faster times came on a outdoor rubber track,
which are ideal conditions to run... has some potential as a north-south
change of pace guy for a team that uses more of a speed-back as
their #1... average hands out of the backfield and not great potential
for special teams... the fact that he was able to dominate at
times the past few years against his level of competition helps
increase his final grade.
NORTHWESTERN STATE, LA (March 18th) junior running back DERRICK
JOHNESE ran between 4.42 and 4.48 in the 40... some had his times
faster/slower depending on the 1st or 2nd 40-time... 4.20 short
shuttle... 7.08 three-cone... 36.5" vertical... 9'10"
broad jump and also did 14 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at
5087, 208 pounds... was shorter than expected... very quick, plus
he showed the straight-line speed to be considered as an all-purpose
back... likely to get tried on special teams, as a kick returner...
but he will have to show good hands in camp to make a team...
senior safety/linebacker JAMALL JOHNSON ran between 4.48 and 4.56
in the 40... 4.28 short shuttle... 7.39 three-cone... 39.5"
vertical... 10'2" broad jump and also did 15 reps of 225
pounds... weighed in at 5117, 208 pounds... played outside linebacker
in college, posting impressive stats when you consider they rotated
him at times... showed the kind of all-around athleticism necessary
to make the transition back to safety... will have to be a special
teams demon early... senior fullback ISSA BANNA ran between 4.92
and 5.00 in the 40... 4.33 short shuttle... 7.35 three-cone...
34.5" vertical... 8'9" broad jump and also did 21 reps
of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5107, 234 pounds... has improved
his straight-line speed some since last spring... but is a better
athlete than his (lack of ) straight-line speed would indicate...
won't be offered much of a chance to see the ball at the professional
level... has some ability as a lead blocker... several other senior
prospects worked out, but their results were not immediately made
available.
COLORADO (March 18th) senior running back BOBBY PURIFY ran between
4.66 and 4.72 in the 40... 35.5" vertical... 10'0" broad
jump and also did 18 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6002,
212 pounds... durability and consistency were the two big questions
about his game, but his average 40-times bring into question whether
his game can transfer to the pro level... senior offensive lineman
SAM WILDER ran between 5.25 and 5.31 in the 40... 25 reps of 225
pounds... 27" vertical... weighed in at 6047, 303 pounds...
former defensive lineman, played mostly tackle in college... has
also bulked up nearly 20 pounds in the past two years... work-in-progress
type guy... technique still needs work, over-extends too often
against quicker pass rushers... decent athlete with some small
area quickness... senior defensive tackle MATTHEW MCCHESNEY ran
between 5.00 and 5.08 in the 40... 4.62 short shuttle... 7.60
three-cone... 27.5" vertical... 8'7" broad jump and
also did 21 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6037, 307 pounds...
has gained some good weight (over 10 pounds), since last spring...
previously had timed in the 4.9 range at about 295 pounds... better
athlete than performer to date on the field... but has some upside
if you can get his instincts to match those physical tools...
fits more for a one-gap scheme... senior defensive tackle BRANDON
DABDOUB ran between 5.12 and 5.18 in the 40... 4.72 short shuttle...
7.88 three-cone... 29.5" vertical... 8'9" broad jump
and also did 24 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6003, 283
pounds... under-sized nose tackle... might want to bulk back up
to over 290 pounds... strong for his size... good technician who
is a classic over-achiever type... results for senior offensive
lineman DEREK STEMRICH (#52) were not immediately made available.
ALABAMA-BIRMINGHAM (March 17th) senior wide receiver RODDY WHITE,
who had a full report on in our last edition, also did 18 reps
of 225 pounds at his workout last Thursday.
COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES (March 17th) senior safety DANIEL LEGER
(#27) ran between 4.48 and 4.55 in the 40... 4.42/4.50 short shuttle...
7.38 three-cone... 36.5" vertical... 10'1" broad jump
and also did 13 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5116, 212
pounds... strong safety that was always around the ball; created
seven turnovers to go along with 124 tackles, 17 tackles for loss
and even had nine sacks... showed far better speed/athleticism
than expected... his toughness/aggressiveness on film to go along
with that production on film... he probably raised his PFA status...
senior quarterback CHAD FRIEHAUF ran between 4.90 and 4.98 in
the 40... 4.38 short shuttle... 7.26 three-cone... 34" vertical...
10'1" broad jump... weighed in at 6062, 211 pounds... pretty
good athlete for his size... needs to mature physically; has the
body-type to fillout to 225-230 pounds... would obviously be stronger
and likely have more zip on his passes... played in both the Cactus
Bowl and Las Vegas All-American Classic... had a solid team around
him; check out senior-to-be wide receiver Justin Gallas (#8).
OHIO (March 16th) senior quarterback RYAN HAWK (#12) ran between
4.52 and 4.58 in the 40... some had him at between 4.57/4.62...
4.02 short shuttle... 32" vertical... also did 18 reps of
225 pounds... weighed in at 6011, 206 pounds... benefitted when
the team switched to a pro-style attack from the old triple option...
better-than-advertised arm strength... sturdy built kid that can
gain yardage, as a runner... intelligent, makes good reads/decisions...
has been his team's captain at every level of football... still
had room to improve/develop... also known, as a gym rat, so he
could bulkup over time to 215-pound range... would have earned
more visibility if they had played a pro-style offense his entire
career... Miami and Philadelphia seemed to pay close attention
to his workout... senior defensive back CHIP COX (#11) ran between
4.39 and 4.42 in the 40... 3.90 short shuttle... 6.90 three-cone...
44" vertical... 10'4" broad jump... weighed in at 5096,
196 pounds... played both cornerback and strong safety in college...
has posted one of the top Pro Day short shuttle and vertical jump
numbers... worked out at both his own Pro Day and the one at Ohio
State.
NOTRE DAME (March 16th) senior linebacker MIKE GOOLSBY ran between
4.82 and 4.88 in the 40... 4.32 short shuttle... 7.38 three-cone...
33" vertical... 9'11" broad jump and also did 19 reps
of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6027, 244 pounds... more of a two-down
guy, plus he has some durability issues (shoulder/collarbone)...
senior defensive back DWIGHT ELLICK ran between 4.36 and 4.42
in the 40... 4.11 short shuttle... 6.92 three-cone... 36"
vertical... 10'2" broad jump and also did 17 reps of 225
pounds... weighed in at 5103, 182 pounds... started most of the
past two seasons at right corner, but failed to show the timed
speed he ran at the Pro Day on a consistent basis... has good
toughness for his size... more of a nickel/dime type guy if he
can improve his technique... senior linebacker DEREK CURRY ran
between 4.81 and 4.85 in the 40... 4.50 short shuttle... 7.08
three-cone... 37" vertical... 9'8" broad jump and also
did 15 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6016, 239 pounds...
probably more of a late round to PFA type... but in a draft that
lacks quality depth in terms of SLB's... he has a good chance
to stick on a roster... better on tape than as a workout guy...
senior defensive tackle GREG PAULY is not likely to workout for
scouts/coaches before the draft, as he suffered a broken right
ankle in late February, so it is likely that he will be signed
as a free agent after the draft... several other senior prospects
worked out, but their results were not immediately made available.
TENNESSEE (March 16th) senior quarterback/defensive back C.J.
LEAK ran between 4.60 and 4.66 in the 40... 4.40 short shuttle...
7.22 three-cone... 35.5" vertical... 9'7" broad jump
and also did 17 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6022, 222
pounds... former standout HS quarterback recruit... was worked
out at his Pro Day, as a safety... senior fullback/running back
JABARI DAVIS pulled up on his first 40-time, as he suffered a
right hamstring injury... most say he likely would have crossed
the line in the mid-4.6 range... did 21 reps of 225 pounds...
weighed in at 5105, 243 pounds... senior offensive lineman/tight
end VICTOR MCCLURE ran between 5.68 and 5.75 in the 40... 4.92
short shuttle... 8.45 three-cone... 26" vertical... 7'7"
broad jump... weighed in at 6036, 360 pounds... played mostly
tight end in college... but would need to shed 20-30 pounds to
even warrant a FA look as an offensive lineman... senior offensive
lineman JASON RESPERT ran between 5.28 and 5.35 in the 40... 4.68
short shuttle... 7.78 three-cone... 31.5" vertical... 8'2"
broad jump and also did 33 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at
6025, 307 pounds... has played across the line in college... some
early durability issues... more of an interior lineman for the
NFL with center potentially being his best pro position... since
he is smart, strong base, but limited overall athleticism... senior
running back/return man DERRICK TINSLEY ran between 4.50 and 4.55
in the 40... which was much slower than anticipated... 4.20 short
shuttle... 7.02 three-cone.... 33" vertical... 10'0"
broad jump and also did 13 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at
5111, 193 pounds... more of an all-purpose type guy... has very
good hands and runs good enough routes to have played WR, as well
as RB in college... should have posted better results at his Pro
Day, as he has been timed at or below 4.4 in the past... senior
return man COREY LARKINS ran between 4.52 and 4.55 in the 40...
35" vertical... 17 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5071,
200 pounds... played some at running back and defensive back in
college... more of a FA type that would have to impress on special
teams to get more of a look than that.
KANSAS (March 16th) senior center JOE VAUGHN ran between 5.38
and 5.42 in the 40... 4.78 short shuttle... 7.97 three-cone...
25.5" vertical... 8'1" broad jump and also did 19 reps
of 225 pounds; was docked two reps for not locking out... weighed
in at 5117, 288 pounds... had tweaked his hamstring, while training,
but did a full workout anyway... upon first glance at these results
you would not take a second look... but at the pivot spot he offers
very good leadership and intangibles... shows some small area
quickness on film... had a number of very good efforts versus
some top-notch DT's... stronger on the field than in the weight
room... shows a strong base, uses his lack of height as a leverage
advantage... could play with more power in terms of his initial
punch... but I like him to give some veteran a run for their money
in camp... senior wide receiver BRANDON RIDEAU ran between 4.50
and 4.55 in the 40... some had him with faster times... 4.28 short
shuttle... 7.01 three-cone... 35" vertical... 10'7"
broad jump and also did 13 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at
6034, 200 pounds... has started to fillout some, as he was about
185 pounds last spring... this was a kid that should have had
a breakout senior campaign... has good tools, although he needs
to be pushed at times... upside is there... faster than Ernest
Wilford (Jaguars), but could contribute in similar fashion as
a late round pick... senior cornerback SHELTON SIMMONS ran between
4.43 and 4.45 in the 40... 4.18 short shuttle... 7.26 three-cone...
33" vertical... 9'10" broad jump and also did 9 reps
of 225 pounds... senior defensive end/linebacker DAVID MCMILLAN
did only drills.
DELAWARE (March 15th) senior linebacker MONDOE DAVIS ran between
4.53 and 4.55 in the 40... 4.12 short shuttle... 7.08 three-cone...
40" vertical... 9'10" broad jump and also did 29 reps
of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6004, 232 pounds... these results
came as part of Temple's Pro Day... he had posted similar numbers,
including 32 reps of 225 pounds at his own Pro Day on March 8th...
has shown impressive athleticism, quickness and hands... while
also demonstrating better fluidness in his hip movement and coverage
skills than some more highly-profiled LB's... has above-average
intangibles; smarts, leadership skills and high motor on the field...
has some versatility, as he might be able to play inside, as well...
Green Bay, Philadelphia among others have shown him more attention.
KENT STATE (March 15th) senior running back DAVID ALSTON ran
between 4.43 and 4.48 in the 40... 3.98 short shuttle... 6.84
three-cone... 41.5" vertical... 10'8" broad jump and
also did 21 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5090, 210 pounds...
posted these results, as part of Temple's Pro Day on March 15th...
also worked out at Penn's Pro Day on March 3rd... 43.5" vertical...
11'1" broad jump and 24 reps of 225 pounds... scouts deferred
on the 40-times and agility drills, as the surface was terrible...
he will workout out again at his own school on March 30th... all-purpose
back with the potential to contribute on both returns and as a
change-of-pace back.
TEMPLE (March 15th) junior quarterback WALTER WASHINGTON ran
between 4.90 and 5.02 in the 40... 4.72 short shuttle... 7.32
three-cone... 31" vertical... 8'7" broad jump and also
did 12 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5116, 240 pounds...
what should have been his chance to impress scouts/coaches turned
out to be one of the more disappointing workouts done to date...
had timed 4.5 range in the past... was not athletic in his drills...
shorter than adverstised... then had an equally inconsistent positional/passing
workout... not sure where he goes from here, as some teams also
had thought about a position change... this likely will lead to
more of an early CFL career, but it's a shame cause he did some
good things on his tapes... senior linebacker TROY BENNETT ran
between 4.72 and 4.80 in the 40... 4.68 short shuttle... 7.29
three-cone... 30" vertical... 8'8" broad jump and also
did 23 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6002, 237 pounds...
needs to get back up to the 245-pound range... has played both
inside and strong-side... has a shot as a reserve and special
teams performer... junior linebacker RIAN WALLACE, junior defensive
tackle A.J. LINDSAY and senior defensive tackle ANTWON BURTON
also worked out, but their results were not immediately made available...
one side note is that most of the players said that the combination
of weather conditions (very windy) and a slow Field Turf surface
led to the times much slower than they had run in the past, but
even with a 0.1 or 0.2 improvement, all of the prospects that
ran came up short of legitimate pro results.
GRAMBLING STATE (March 11th) senior outside linebacker/defensive
end KENNETH PETTWAY ran between 4.62 and 4.70 in the 40... some
had him with slower times... 35.5" vertical... 9'6"
broad jump... weighed in at 6032, 234 pounds... has shed some
of his extra pounds, since the end of the season... has played
as high as 255 pounds in the past... best served as a 3-4 OLB...
shows some good natural pass rush skills... posted these numbers,
as part of Louisiana Tech's Pro Day.
LOUISIANA TECH (March 11th) senior wide receiver TRAMISSIAN DAVIS
ran between 4.48 and 4.52 in the 40... 4.26 short shuttle... 6.98
three-cone... 38.5" vertical... 9'11" broad jump and
also did 16 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5112, 186 pounds...
under-rated kid that should find a home with a team that likes
to use multiple receiver/spread offensive sets often, as a late-round
or PFA... senior defensive tackle CHRIS VAN HOY ran between 5.30
and 5.38 in the 40... 4.82 short shuttle... 8.05 three-cone...
31" vertical... 8'3" broad jump and also did 30 reps
of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6035, 307 pounds... played DT and
NT in college... if his lack of footspeed keeps him from adjusting
to the pro game speed than I might flip him over, as an offensive
guard based on his upper body strength and body type; could easily
bulk up to 320-325 pounds.
TROY STATE (March 10th) senior running back DEWITT BETTERSON
ran between 4.60 and 4.66 in the 40... 4.22 short shuttle... 7.38
three-cone... 37.5" vertical... 10'1" broad jump and
also did 21 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 5116, 220 pounds...
his 40-times are improved from the 4.70/4.75 estimates from last
spring... has solid performances in the post-season... could develop
into a solid #2 type back over time... north-south runner with
little wiggle but the ability to gain yards after the contact...
prior back injury has caused some concern... senior defensive
tackle ALFRED MALONE ran between 5.12 and 5.20 in the 40... 4.62
short shuttle... 7.42 three-cone... 35" vertical... 9'2"
broad jump and 21 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at 6037, 298
pounds... this is a good all-around workout for a 300-pound interior
defender... there are some teams that really like this guy's upside...
while others give him just a PFA or FA grade... did not do as
much on film as these numbers would indicate... senior offensive
tackle HENRY TELLIS ran between 5.10 and 5.18 in the 40... 4.88
short shuttle... 7.90 three-cone... 26.5" vertical... 7'10"
broad jump and also did 21 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at
6052, 308 pounds... ran much better than in the past (5.40 range)...
may not have the ideal footwork/athleticism to stay at left tackle...
but he has playing experience on that side, and long wingspan
(70"), so he could a surprise PFA... senior offensive guard
JUNIOR LOUISSANT ran between 5.08 and 5.18 in the 40... 4.88 short
shuttle... 7.81 three-cone... 29.5" vertical... 8'7"
broad jump and also did 24 reps of 225 pounds... weighed in at
6013, 281 pounds... played OG in college, but a few teams are
planning to do private workouts with him as a fullback, which
