Chairman of the College Football Hall of Fame
Archie Manning saw that his home state was well represented
in this year's College Football Hall of Fame.
On December 9, 2008, three players with strong Louisiana
ties will be inducted, including two former Saints and LSU's Heisman
Trophy winner in 1959.
Once the NFL's rookie of the year, RB Reuben Mayes
played four years for the Saints from 1986 to 1988 and 1990, collecting
3408 rushing yards, 388 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns. Mayes
and RB Dalton Hilliard teamed to provide a dynamic 1-2 punch for
the Saints. Mayes finished his career two years later in Seattle,
near where he was a 1984 All-American as a record-setting runningback
at Washington State. The two-time pro bowler currently works for
his alma mater.
Jim Dombrowski was the Saints' sixth overall pick
in 1986 and an anchor for 11 years playing left tackle and left
guard. He started 137 games for the team and retired after the
1996 season and still lives in Mandeville, La. Dombrowski was
a former All-American at Virginia, winning numerous athletic and
academic awards.
Billy Cannon is the most famous player in LSU Tigers
history, winning the Heisman Trophy on his way to a national championship
and running roughshod over the SEC in the late 1950's. His NFL
career featured stops in Houston, Oakland and Kansas City. Now
a dentist, Cannon lives in Baton Rouge.
