The Saints cut four players on the day they
announced their undrafted
free agent class.
RB Jammal Branch, DE Josh Cooper and DT McKinley
Boykin were all undrafted free agent signees themselves and each
played for the Saints in past years. The fourth was WR Carlton
Brewster, who was only signed
this past January as a street free agent.
Branch played significantly in one game for the
Saints in 2006, the meaningless season finale against Carolina
when playoff seedings were already decided. Branch scored his
only NFL touchdown in that game. He appeared in only four games
in 2007. Branch is most remembered for solid production during
preseason games the past few years.
Boykin, a product of Ole Miss, played in three games
in 2007, collecting five tackles each in games against St. Louis
and Houston. The former practice squadder and reserve defensive
tackle was a member of the final class of Saint allocations to
now-defunct NFL Europe in 2007.
Another former Ole Miss Rebel, Cooper played in
18 games over the past two seasons with the Saints, filling the
role of a rotation pass rusher, collecting 1.5 sacks. The Ole
Miss products and the others released are being given a chance
to catch on early with other teams.
