WR Robert Meachem |
ESPN reports the Saints have $11.271 million
in salary cap room before signing Robert Meachem. With only
$992,630 remaining in the rookie salary cap pool for 2007, the
Saints will have $10.278 million remaining assuming that Meachem's
rookie contract has a 2007 cap value up to the team's limit.
Because the Saints have signed up six of their seven picks
as of last week, and the NFL caps team's rookie spending, negotiations
for year one base salary and first year signing bonus are pretty
much done for Russ Ball, Mickey Loomis, and Meachem's agent
Jeff Griffin.
Negotiations will reportedly not start until two weeks before
training camp, when the Saints are counting on other first round
pick signings to help box in the total contract numbers.
Two new receivers: NFL Europa is now dead
(ceasing operations immediately, as announced this week), but
two more of its 2007 veterans are joining the Saints. The team
will already be welcoming back its own allocations, S Chris
Reis, DT McKinley Boykin and DE Willie Evans. Now the team has
signed receivers Tramain Hall and Aaron Hosack.
Hall, a 5'10, 190 pound former NC State product, played with
Reis and Boykin for Cologne this past spring and camped with
Tennessee last fall. Former Minnesota Gopher 6'5, 230 pound
Hosack was All-Europa for Frankfurt in 2006 and played the past
three springs for the Galaxy. Meanwhile, he bounced around with
the Vikings but never caught on in the regular season.
Both join a depth chart that is for the most part spoken for
already, with Meachem, Marques Colston, Devery Henderson and
Terrance Copper probably already wrapping up roster spots. Henderson
and Copper have each come on strong in the spring to defend
their jobs. WR Lance Moore is speedy and may already have the
inside path to the kick/punt return job.
Notes: Former Saints GM Randy Mueller has
been given an extension by the Miami Dolphins... Backup tackle
Zach Strief's "Dream Big" Foundation First Annual
Football Camp will benefit his high school, Milford High in
Milford Ohio... Saints director of college scouting Rick Reiprish
ran the workout of Morgan State defensive tackle Robert Armstrong,
who will be available in the supplemental draft on July 12.
Teams can spend their 2008 draft picks early, on a handful of
players ineligible for their 2007 collegiate seasons, but who
were not in last April's draft...
