The Saints have put $19.5 million down on a new
truck. Tom Benson, owner of car dealerships, would know what
its like.
That high-octane, super-sized California import
is defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis, their seventh overall pick
in last April's draft. His new five-year contract, not six or
seven as would be customary, was negotiated by agent Eugene Parker
and the Saints' front office led by Mickey Loomis and Khai Harley.
The top 16 picks in the draft are allowed to sign
contracts up to seven years long. But the finite nature of the
league's CBA complicated salary cap issues beyond 2010 are initially
being blamed for the delay.
Picks ahead and behind Ellis in the draft, including
Chiefs DT Glenn Dorsey, Jets DE Vernon Gholston and Patriots LB
Jerod Mayo, have already signed, providing framing for the contract.
The last time the Saints drafted a defender in the
top 10, it was DT Johnathan Sullivan, whose seven year contract
demanded $11.4 million guaranteed. Reggie Bush's contract, the
largest rookie deal in Saints history, was for six years, $51
million with $26.2 million guaranteed.
Ellis has missed six days of practices and is due
to report in on Wednesday. The Saints have a single practice scheduled
for Wednesday.
