The Saints held a workout for some veteran
free agents on Sunday, including former LSU Tiger,
Tampa Bay Buc and Indianapolis Colt DT Anthony "Booger" MacFarland,
journeyman safety Lance Schulters, and 2-3 others, according
to head coach Sean Payton.
Schulters, 6'2, 202, was added to the roster on
Monday and was at practice. Payton praised the 32-year old
veteran's versatility, saying that he
could help
at strong or free safety. Schulters was a fouth round pick of
the 49ers in 1998 and is a native of Guyana, was raised in Brooklyn
and attended Hofstra.
He has played for four teams prior, including the
49ers, Titans, Dolphins, Falcons in 2006
and
Dolphins again in 2007. He started four games for Miami last
season and played in seven games, collecting 37 tackles. Schulters
in early years was a Pro Bowl safety with the 49ers.
MacFarland spent the offseason recovering from
a serious Achilles tendon injury.
To make room on the 80-man roster, the Saints waived
LS Ryan Senser.
Injury Update: Two potential starters
at cornerback, rookie CB Tracy Porter and veteran Randall Gay,
rode the stationary cycles on Monday at practice, sidelined with
a hamstring and triceps injury, respectively.
LB Mark Simoneau injured his back during the game
and also sat out on Monday, joined by veteran DT Brian Young
(foot) who has been regularly excused from practice as he works
to strengthen a problematic knee, but who now has a foot injury.
Rookie WR Adrian Arrington, the most serious active
injury on the squad right now, remains out with a turf toe injury.
On
the positive side, TE Jeremy Shockey had an active practice
on Monday and is on track to make his Saint debut in Cincinnatti
this weekend. CB Mike McKenzie also practiced, and his return
would be a welcome breath of healthy air to a cornerback depth
chart.
