On Monday night, linebacker Scott Shanle covered Devery Henderson
in the right flat and tackled the speedy receiver a yard short
of first down at the Dallas eight yard line.
Wednesday, Shanle watched Hendrson on the practice field at
Saints training camp, having just arrived in New Orleans via
a trade. The Saints sent a 2007 draft pick to the Cowboys, believed
to be a seventh round pick.
Shanle, a 6'2, 245 pound inside linebacker is another acolyte
of defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs, who coached the linebackers
in Dallas. Shanle now joins former teammate Scott Fujita in the
Saints' linebacking corp, and likely in the starting lineup eventually.
Shanle was wearing #58 on the sidelines today. Fujita and Shanle
were in the starting lineup together in Dallas last year after
starters Dat Nguyen and Al Singleton went down with injury.
Like Fujita, Shanle is a former collegiate walk-on who possesses
neither dominating strength or speed, but football intelligence
and instincts that make him a valuable commodity on the field.
While with the Rams as a rookie, Shanle served a four-game suspension
for a violation of the league's steroids policy. At the time,
Shanle said he did not know what cause the positive test.
Earlier this offseason, Shanle was a restricted free agent with
a seventh round price tag who signed his one-year $721,600 base
tender. He was originally a seventh round pick of the Rams out
of Nebraska.
The Saints' rebound from their embarrassing loss in Shreveport
will a little lighter: The team cut seven players on Wednesday: kicker
Connor Hughes, guards Stefon Wheeler and Darnell Alford, center
Pascal Matla, linebackers Russel Rabe and Nate Wayne, and
cornerback Ray Williams. Wayne was with the Saints for only two
weeks, as he was signed on August 8.
Shanle started at weakside linebacker on Saturday August 26
in preseason game three against the Indianapolis Colts.
