Marques Colston bent his thumb against
Bucs CB Ronde Barber's helmet during a pass breakup,
shook his sore hand and stayed in the game, even making another
catch later on.
But on Monday, Colston had suffered a torn ligament
in his left thumb. Surgery will put him out four to six weeks,
likely as many as six. He will be wearing a cast for a month.
Colston suffered a similar injury to his right hand
in college.
The injury thrusts David Patten and Devery Henderson
into the spotlight at wide receiver, though TE Jeremy Shockey
and RB Reggie Bush are also big parts of the passing game.
But the 6'4 Colston is the Saints' only receiver
with red zone size, that is, size to jump and shield defenders
in tight quarters. Henderson, 5'11, Patten, 5'10, Terrance Copper,
6'0, and Lance Moore, 5'9 all lack imposing size. Robert Meachem
is the tallest healthy receiver at 6'2, but lacks refinement.
Shockey, 6'5, looks to fill Colston's shoes as a
big man in the red zone.
