Head Coach Sean Payton

Before the Saints game in Washington today, Saints
GM Mickey Loomis stole the spotlight with news of a new contract
for head coach Sean Payton.
A five-year extension puts Payton under contract
through 2012 and prevents his deal from expiring after next season.
The three-year extension contains a considerable raise for Payton,
who with Drew Brees has smashed team and league records for passing
productivity.
FoxSports.com reports that the agreement is a new
five year contract, beginning immediately, and puts Payton in
the top five of pay among NFL head coaches.
Contracts for assistants usually follow the head
coach.
Payton has guided the team through troubling moments,
coming to New Orleans after a dismal 2005 season both on and off
the field. The Saints before Payton were listless and in serious
trouble on the depth chart and in the business of the NFL. The
homeless 2005 Saints rebounded to become NFC Championship game
contenders, and in Payton's first year as a head coach the Saints
had the most successfully season in their history.
