In a move that saves the Saints a sum total of $205,000 on the salary cap, the Saints released punter Toby Gowin last night and re-signed him to a base minimum contract today.
Gowin's original release would have saved the team $655,000 on the cap. Gowin agreed to rejoin the team for the NFL minimum $525,000, which only counts $450,000 against the salary cap.
Gowin is expected to compete with Dirk Johnson and Dan Hadenfeldt for the starting job with the Saints during training camp. Entering his third season with the Saints, Gowin also handles kickoff duties for veteran PK John Carney.
The Saints will likely use the extra cap space to sign rookies, although bringing in a veteran runningback is a possibility.
