Round 6 - Pick 174 - Pittsburgh CB Bernard "Josh" Lay - 6'0", 197, 4.47
Big, experienced cornerback from Pittsburgh with a 40.5" vertical leap. More of a zone cover scheme defender, since his speed is better on track than in pads. Remains very quick with long arms and can cover the short range well, which makes him better in zone than in man coverage. Needs to improve toughness, as his tackling left something to be desired at the collegiate level and minor injuries were more troublesome than they should have been.
Lay has the pedigree- his cousin is former Pro Bowl CB Ty Law. A former high school basketball standout, Lay had seven interceptions in four years at Pittsburgh, three as a starter. He was All-Conference as a junior, and played a lot over the past three seasons, improving every year, especially when he came on strong as a sophomore. Obviously, taken this late in the draft, is in need of some coaching and development. Not guaranteed that he will be a cornerback, but a move to safety would only be possible if his tackling improves considerably.
