Round Five - Pick 145
Wingate CB David Jones
5'11.5 - 196 - 4.50 - 21 years old
It was a trend that started last year, and it's really picking up steam now. Jones is yet another tiny-school prospect and like many of the other minor program products taken this year and last, he is physically pretty much arrived. But after facing very limited competition and without the benefits of pro coaching, Jones is a lot like third rounder Usama Young and in need of Tom Shaw's close guidance.
More quick than fast, Jones was a monster in Division II, named All-South Atlantic Conference facing schools like Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill and Newberry. Wingate is in North Carolina. Made plays all over the field and has great special teams potential, especially as a kick
returner. Is more raw than Young and is a real project but has great size and plays faster than his reported sub-4.5 40 speed. Good jumper and fighter for jump balls with a 35" vertical. Poor tackler at this point, but that can be improved. Has great ball skills and is versatile. No injury history.
Had 15 career interceptions and over the past two years and scored five times, three interception returns and two 2006 receiving touchdowns of 78 and 47 yards. Also blocked a punt for a safety.
Jones got exposure to all NFL teams at the Hula Bowl.
