When a federal court restrained the NFL from suspending Deuce McAllister, Will Smith and others last Friday, the Saints had an interesting dilemma.
Earlier in the week, when the news of the four-game suspension hit, the Saints moved swiftly and plucked two players off the practice squads of the Cowboys and Dolphins, respectively.
The Saints added DE Rob Ninkovich from Miami and DE/LB Tearrius George from Dallas, pinning themselves to those players for three weeks per NFL rules about signing players from practice squads.
So last Friday, with McAllister and Smith suddenly back on the roster and two practice squad players unable to leave the roster, the Saints were forced to get a rare exemption from the league, carrying 55 players (Ninkovich and George were inactive).
On Monday the exemption ended. Kick returner Courtney Roby, who left the Atlanta game yesterday with an ankle injury, has been placed on injured reserve, joining 15 other Saints on that list.
The team also waived backup CB David Pittman, who was signed a month ago but never dressed in four games.
