The Saints have signed the following rookie undrafted free agents after the 2009 NFL Draft.
Wisconsin LB Jonathan Casillas - 6'1, 228, 4.5 40
A knee injury early in 2008 kept him out of the first two games of the season but he played through the season. Had surgery after the season and missed all offseason scouting events. Cited for the equivalent of a DWI in Wisconsin and escaped punishment. Assuming he is healthy, quick and fast with good tackling fundamentals. Undersized and not convincingly instinctive enough to be an NFL linebacker at this point.
UCLA QB Patrick Cowan - 6'4, 218, 4.9 40
Missed the 2008 season completely with a serious spring knee injury (torn ACL), instead aiding the coaching staff as a senior. Played in only 19 career games and had the most playing time in 2006 when he started the final eight games after Ben Olsen's injury. Native of British Columbia, Canada. Was a scratch and claw quarterback who was crafty but not experienced. Has prototypical size and not much of a runner.
Texas G Cedric Dockery - 6'3, 315, 5.3 40
Brother of Derrick Dockery, guard for the Redskins. Major knee injury (torn ACL) in 2006 but started final 25 games of career. Needs to show that he loves the game. Has all the physical tools needed and needs to refine a soft body.
Western Illinois RB Herb Donaldson - 5'10, 220, 4.65 40
Good intangibles and vision. No history of injury. Does not fumble. Very powerful frame built. Lacks impressive speed. There are concerns about his level of competition, where he was extremely productive. His collegiate rushing numbers are second only to former Saint RB Aaron Stecker at Western Illinois.
Stanford C Alex Fletcher - 6'2, 297, 5.41 40
Undersized but versatile, played both guard and center. Tough and hard-working, needs to put on serious muscle mass. Leader and an emotional player from a football family.
Texas A&M CB Danny Gorrer - 6'0", 185, 4.40 40
ACL tear in 2007 capped a rising career as a shutdown corner. Tough childhood, concerns about his entourage. Proved to NFL eyes that his knee was recovered when he ran back-to-back 4.4 and 4.42 40s at his pro day. Only started four games as a senior.
Georgia WR Kenneth Harris - 6'3, 215, 4.47 40
Only 41 catches in four seasons at Georgia, though one of his two career touchdowns came against LSU in 2008. Right ankle injury bothered him as a senior. Already graduated. Never really got much playing time.
Wisconsin RB PJ Hill - 5'10, 222, 4.64
Short, stocky, productive college runningback. Injuries, including a leg injury that resulted in a plate in his left tibia, haunted him throughout his career. Left after his junior season. Led the Big 10 in rushing in 2006 as a redshirt freshman, considered a Heisman candidate at one point. Needs to completely overhaul his body in a weight room. Experienced downhill runner. Nearly 4000 career rushing yards. Arrested for DUI on March 16 in Wisconsin and has another pending DUI case in Arizona.
Portland State CB Reggie Jones - 6'0, 193, 4.43 40
Good speed, just a shade under six feet tall with a 40" vertical. High school track runner. Converted late in college career from wide receiver, tranfer from Idaho where he had family problems and failing grades. Jones' mother killed his adopted father and is in jail. Transferred to Portland State as a reclamation project by Jerry Glanville. Sports an enormous afro and idolizes Deion Sanders. Foot injury slowed him in 2008. Remarkable athlete and a playmaker in his one season at Portland State, but it was against questionable level of competition.
Clark Atlanta OL Sam McNaulty - 6'4, 320, 5.1 40
Big prospect from small university, first team all SIAC team. Played tackle and may be given a shot there before moving inside. Good athlete, surprising mobility.
Kent State T Gus Parrish - 6'4, 302, 5.34 40
Long arms, big frame but needs to spend a year or two in a pro weight room. Started 34 games at right then left tackle. May have to move inside to guard but doesn't have much agility to pull.
Louisville WR Chris Vaughn - 6'3, 224, 4.59 40
Transferred from Notre Dame after 2005 season. Only 27 catches in three seasons at Louisville with no touchdowns. Injuries cut short 2007 season. Served a one game suspension for a strange incident where he got arrested for shooting a paintball gun at a crowd of people in front of a hotel. Was supposed to put it all together in 2008 but had 7 receptions all season until coaches played him to get him on film, catching 12 balls in the final two regular season games. Poor senior season was haunted by lapses in concentration on the field.
The Saints pursued but were not able to sign the following rookies: undrafted Western Kentucky G Greg Ryan (signed with Baltimore), Liberty RB Rashad Jennings (drafted by Jacksonville with the 250th pick overall), undrafted Louisiana-Lafayette RB Tyrell Fenroy (signed with Chicago), undrafted Troy OL Dion Small (signed with Tampa Bay), undrafted Tennessee RB Arian Foster (signed with Houston).
The Saints are welcoming the following for a tryout at their rookie minicamp: Northern Illinois WR Matt Simon, James Madison S Marcus Haywood, Arkansas-Pine Bluff LB Tim Turner, South Dakota State K Parker Douglass. Former South Florida DT Richard Clebert, who graduated in 2007 and played in the CFL, will also work out for the Saints.
