Thomas Morstead, punter, SMU
5th Round (164th Overall) - Thomas Morstead, punter, SMU
6'4, 225, 4.7 40
The Saints traded up into the fifth round to get big punter Morstead from Southern Methodist. The Saints gave up their seventh round pick in 2009 and a fifth round pick in 2010 to get Morstead, who figures to be in the competition to start for the Saints. The team went through three punters last year before finding free agent Glenn Pakulak midway through the season.
Morstead was the starting punter for the South squad of the Senior Bowl. Handled punting and shared kicking duties for SMU and runs a 4.7 40, so the athletic ability potential is certainly there. Has great leg strength though he's never been a kickoff specialist. Was 5-of-6 in 2008 on field goals over 40 yards. An excellent directional punter, only 19 of his punts were returned as a senior. Does not have a lot of experience as a placeholder so will need to work.
