Top Louisiana Prospects in the 2009 NFL Draft

The Saints and the rest of the NFL have the privilege of scouting and acquiring some of Louisiana's finest talent. Here's the complete list of draftable talent in this year's annual selection meeting that went to high school or college in the great state of Louisiana, and some profiles on the very best of them.

1. Tyson Jackson, DE, Louisiana State, 6'4, 295, 5.00 40

Prime specimen of a five-technique defensive end, best suited for end in the 3-4 defense. With such size and strength against the run he'd be a great left end in a 4-3 front as well. The biggest thing holding Jackson out of the top three picks in the draft are his style - primarily a run-defender. Compares to Charles Grant of the Saints, and could be used similarly in a 4-3 defense as an end on run downs and a tackle on passing downs. One of many draft prospects this year hailing from Edgard, Louisiana, population 2,637.

2. Shawn Nelson, TE, Southern Miss, 6'5, 240, 4.54 40

Gonzales native and a product of East Ascension is a rising prospect and widely regarded as the second best tight end in the draft. Has great wheels, length and size. A fantastic pass catcher and a four-year starter. Cousin of former LSU star and Kansas City Chief DT Glenn Dorsey.

3. Darry Beckwith, MLB, LSU, 6'0, 242, 4.74 40

Baton Rouge native and an experienced starter for the Tigers at two different positions. Great in downfield coverage with fantastic intangibles. Probably best as a weakside linebacker in a zone scheme defense or a middle linebacker in a cover two scheme like Minnesota or Indianapolis.
4. Troy Kropog, OG, Tulane, 6'5, 310, 5.29 40

Played both tackle positions and is a dedicated student of the game. Similar to the Saints' Jon Stinchcomb, he will need a year or two in a professional weight room to bulk up, but above the shoulders it is all there. A Metairie native, Kropog will be an NFL starter at tackle.

5. Demetrius Byrd, WR, LSU, 6'1, 200, 4.4 40

Had a great 2007 season at LSU, including a clutch game-winning, falling-down catch against Auburn that is a young legend in Tiger Stadium. Worlds of speed and leaping ability wasn't displayed well in LSU's 2008 season without stable quarterback play. A native of Miami, Florida has to bring his game up to the pro level in order to succeed. A bad car wreck in Miami a week before the draft may send his stock down despite a prognosis for a full recovery.

6. Nic Harris, LB, Oklahoma, 6'2, 230, 4.83 40

Alexandria native is a poor man's Thomas Davis, the former Georgia standout and current Carolina Panthers. Is a thick, strong tweener between an in-the-box safety and an outside linebacker, Harris played strong safety at Oklahoma and filled in a middle linebacker in a pinch. Played weakside linebacker at the Senior Bowl and showed he could do it.

7. Herman Johnson, OG, LSU, 6'7, 364, 5.56 40

Johnson is an absolute mauler. Will be a strongside guard and proved in college that he could play against top competition, keep his weight down and smother any defender he can get his enormous wingspan on.

8. Curtis Taylor, S, LSU, 6'2, 209, 4.62 40

Franklinton native and a devastating hitter in the secondary, Taylor plays fast and is a great athlete. Could play free safety or strong safety in the NFL though he's likely to make his mark on special teams at first.
9. Keenan Lewis, CB, Oregon State, 6'1, 208, 4.5 40

A Katrina evacuee started for four years in Corvallis, three times on the conference All-Academic team. A corner with great size had seven picks in his final two seasons, including one in his final game, the 3-0 Beaver win over highly favored Pitt.

10. Ricky Jean-Francois, DE, LSU, 6'3, 295, 4.9 40

Terrifying athlete with a penchant for clutch plays, Jean-Francois is a big-time player with elite athleticism and size. When he was on the field for LSU, he terrorized SEC opponents and was a nigh-unstoppable force in the 2007 national championship game. Aside from some character concerns, he's a top-notch athlete who needs to put all the pieces and parts of a professional in place.

Super Sleeper-
Louis West, OG, Henderson State, 6'8, 375, 5.53 40

Out of Baton Rouge via Pasadena Community College in California and Henderson State, Lou is the cousin of former LSU star and current Boston Celtic Glen Davis. West is a huge man and warrants a look in the NFL based on this alone, though his foot speed and conditioning need to be brought up to a pro level.
