Saints Cut FB Darian Barnes; Jenkins Not Expected On Time

The Saints have waived FB Darian Barnes.

The move likely clears a roster spot for a draft pick. The Saints have all four draft picks unsigned right now. Three more current Saints will be released in order to get the draft class in.

Malcolm Jenkins is expected to be late for training camp. Using the term holdout for a player without a contract, such as a rookie draft pick, isn't quite accurate. For our purposes though, we mean it to say that Jenkins and his agent are "holding out" and 1) waiting for other proximate contracts to be signed for picks above and below Jenkins last April and 2) the Saints to loosen up.

As a leading negotiator in the Saints' front office, Mickey Loomis has rarely signed his top pick in time for training camp. Last year top pick Sedrick Ellis missed six days of practices.

WR Robert Meachem did actually sign in time in 2007, Loomis had his entire draft class signed by the end of June, a remarkable turnaround from previous years. Before 2007, the last time an entire Saints class was signed and arrived on time was 1999, when Ricky Williams signed his deal in the early summer.
