Rookie Malcolm Jenkins made a statement on Wednesday, intercepting a pass from Texans starter Matt Schaub and returning it for a mock touchdown. Jenkins' strong performance is a big statement in what has become a battle between he and Randall Gay for the third cornerback spot.
The Saints started Gay in most games last year, but in passing situations, the Saints moved Gay inside to play the slot receiver. The Saints may do the same with Gay or Jenkins this season. Jenkins was playing exactly that position when he cut off Jacoby Jones' route with the interception.
WR D'Juan Wood continues to miss time with a nerve injury in his neck. His slim chances of being a darkhorse on this team are faded.
And with backup tight ends Billy Miller and Darnell Dinkins continuing to miss time with knee and ankle injuries, Buck Ortega is the primary backup to Jeremy Shockey. Ortega caught a touchdown pass from Brunell against the Texans.
DE Charles Grant also continues to miss time with his hamstring injury suffered during the Bengals game. The Saints aren't that concerned, Grant won't be needed to play in the regular season until October 18.
Saints QB Drew Brees missed both joint practices on Wednesday but is expected to join the team tonight and participate in the final joint practice on Thursday. Brees had been away on bereavement, attending his mother's memorial service in Austin, TX. NOPF again extends our thoughts and condolences to the Brees family.
