Notes: Saints walkthrough on Thursday to prep for preseason home opener

  • The Saints had a light walk through on Thursday, similar to what they will do on Saturdays in the regular season the day before a game.
  • Drew Brees is not expected to play past the first quarter, though other starters may continue to play when Mark Brunell enters the game. Joey Harrington is expected to get the most snaps. Brunell will win the battle for the backup job and Harrington might be off the 53-man roster unless Brunell royally stumbles in preseason action.
  • Reggie Bush will in all likelihood start the game, but that'll probably be the extent of it. A series is probably going be it. WR Lance Moore (shoulder) will not start though he may still start on September 13.
  • Kick returner Courtney Roby (hamstring) continues to be limited and won't play Friday night, opening up the door for a finally-healthy Adrian Arrington to creep up the wide receiver depth chart.
  • Linebacker Mark Simoneau's surgery on a torn triceps was pushed back to Thursday, and the Saints will make a decision on his status before game time. It'll likely be injured reserve or a release with an injury settlement, its doubtful the Saints will keep him on the 53-man roster until he's recovered.
  • Two young players in the secondary, CB Tracy Porter (hamstring) and S Chip Vaughn (surgically-repaired torn meniscus in his left knee) will also miss the game. Porter's hamstring injury is worrisome, as the Saints have penciled him in as a starting cornerback.
  • CB Reggie Jones suffered an Achilles injury on Wednesday and may be done. He was not expected to dent the loaded depth chart at cornerback.
  • With Josh Bidwell hurt, the Bucs have signed journeyman Dirk Johnson, a well-tattooed punter who started off with the Saints and had a miraculous, momentum-saving conversion of a fourth down when his punt was nearly blocked. Instead of giving up a potentially game-altering block deep in his own territory, Johnson tucked it and ran up the right sideline for the conversion late in the first half. (Anybody got that video?)
  • Former Saints safety Tebucky Jones is suing the Patriots for what he claims is career-ending medical decisions by team doctors.
  • The Saints may decide to sign veteran linebacker Derrick Brooks or slightly less aged veteran linebacker Derek Smith after the Bengals game.
  • According to IGN.com's Madden NFL 10 simulation, the Saints will go 13-3 and lose the Superbowl to the Patriots. The Falcons also made the playoffs at 10-6 but lost to the Saints in the divisional round. The Saints beat the Redskins in the NFC Championship game. Huh.
  • Former Saints first round pick and superb rookie WR Donte Stallworth has come a long way from scoring in his first six games as a rookie in New Orleans. He's been suspended for the season for his role in the death of a pedestrian.
  • We're surprised the Eagles have signed Michael Vick. The Saints play the Eagles in week two, its highly unlikely Vick will be reinstated before then.
