The Saints have got their roster down to 53 with a couple surprises along the way and a trade.
Cut are: WR Adrian Arrington (7th round pick in 2008), G Nate Bennett (free agent), T Michael Brown (undrafted rookie), C Digger Bujnoch (free agent), T Anthony Davis (veteran free agent), RB Herb Donaldson (undrafted rookie), G Tim Duckworth (second year with Saints), CB Danny Gorrer (undrafted rookie), WR Skyler Green (veteran free agent), QB Joey Harrington (veteran free agent) DT Earl Heyman (undrafted rookie), RB PJ Hill (undrafted rookie), TE Martrez Milner (free agent), OL Jeremy Parnell (undrafted rookie), DT DeMario Pressley (4th round pikc in 2008), WR Courtney Roby (second year with Saints), WR Matt Simon (undrafted rookie), DE Paul Spicer (veteran free agent), LB Anthony Waters (veteran free agent).
The biggest surprise of that list is Spicer, a veteran familiar with Gregg Williams who could have started on opening day. Instead, it appears that a combination of Anthony Hargrove and Jeff Charleston, along with Spicer's agent, forced Spicer off the roster.
The obvious winner of the fourth runningback competition is Lynell Hamilton, the second year player who made a big debut last year with the Saints and has now worked his way onto the roster.
Two draft picks are in the cut list, Arrington who was a longshot to make the team at receiver and Pressley, who was in the thick of competition at defensive tackle. Remi Ayodele has bested Pressley in that competition.
The team also traded an undisclosed 2011 draft pick to New England for tight end David Thomas. With injuries to Darnell Dinkins and Billy Miller the team was very thin at the position.
Rookie safety Chip Vaughn was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury that was more convenient than serious. The team didn't want to risk losing him in the open market and had no room on the roster to save for him while his minor knee meniscus surgery heals up. He will be available in 2010.
TE Billy Miller and FB Olaniyi Sobomehin have also been placed on injury reserve. Miller was lost to an Achilles injury in the preseason finale. It'll be the second straight second on IR for Sobomehin, this time with a shoulder injury.
The potential for more roster churn exists as the team deals with more injuries and cycles men on and off the roster between games.
