Saints Pro Bowl left tackle Jammal Brown was initially supposed to be out through September with a sports hernia injury.
Then, later in training camp, news broke that he had hip surgery and he would be out through October.
Now Brown has been placed on the Injured Reserve list. He is out for the season.
We can only speculate that Brown's hip or sports hernia surgery recoveries are not progressing as well as could be expected.
We also cannot ignore the fact that his total absence from the 2009 season could be fodder for pending high-value contract negotiations.
Meanwhile, the Saints are making due with Jermon Bushrod and Zach Strief at left tackle. Bushrod has been the starter since Week 2 of preseason at left tackle, but ankle injuries have forced him out of the past two games in Philadelphia and Buffalo. Strief, the primary backup and right tackle, also gets a lot of playing time as a sixth down lineman. Strief has also been a temporary fill-in for Brown at left tackle in the past.
Bushrod's ankle injury is the only injury reported from the Saints' victory in Buffalo and is not considered serious. The Saints are down to three offensive tackles on the roster and may make a move there. Starting left guard Carl Nicks has experience playing tackle from college but has started at guard since being drafted.
As expected, the Saints have re-signed veteran backup center Nick Leckey to replace Brown on the 53-man roster.
