The last time the Saints opened a regular season on a Thursday night, in 2007 coming off an NFC Championship game appearance, it was forgettable.
The Saints will open another regular season tomorrow night, coming off of a Super Bowl championship.
Against a familiar opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, the Saints will host a parade, party, concert, pregame Who Dat chant and then, eventually, a football game to open the 2010 NFL season.
The season opener is bittersweet this year, tainted by the taste of looming labor unrest and a possible lockout to endanger the 2011 season. The Saints have already dealt with its first shocks, the Final 8 rules as part of the final league year, and the posturing between ownership and commissioner vs labor has been unyielding.
Will the Saints kick off a season that sees the NFL's dominance of American sports continue only to rise, or will the 2010-11 season be the last in which the NFL enjoyed a profitable frolic through fields of labor peace?
A small bit of trivia: Super Bowl winners are 36-7-1 in the first regular season games in defense of their title.
Late roster move: The Saints waived backup CB Leigh Torrence and re-signed TE Tory Humphrey. The Saints will churn the bottom of the roster in this way throughout the season.
Injury update: DT Anthony Hargrove has been battling a knee injury that has kept him out of practice in both days leading up to the season opener. UPDATE: The NFL Network reports that Hargrove told reporters he had fluid drained from his knee this week, and that he will play.
Also limited in practice were starting middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma (abductor) and starting cornerback Tracy Porter (knee).
Notes: Former fourth round pick S Chip Vaughn has been signed to the Eagles practice squad. A fourth round pick of out Wake Forest by the Saints in 2009, Vaughn missed his rookie season with a knee injury and failed to beat out Usama Young, Chris Reis or Pierson Prioleau this preseason... RB Chris Ivory will wear jersey number 29 when he returns from injury in about a month... Saints 2010 fourth round pick DT Al Woods, a big disappointment from LSU, has been signed to the Steelers' practice squad... One of the stars of 2009 preseason for the Saints who didn't make the team, RB Herb Donaldson has resurfaced on the Titans' practice squad... Well-traveled J.T. O'Sullivan has signed in San Diego. Once a late-round flyer by the Saints, he was part of the trade bounty that landed CB Mike McKenzie in New Orleans. Since then, O'Sullivan has landed on eight teams, not including NFL Europe stints...
