Notes: Torrence, other news around the Saints

Torrence: The Saints have re-signed CB Leigh Torrence, the veteran who has been with the Saints as a reserve since 2008.  There was room on the 53-man roster because of the loss of Chris Reis to a season-ending shoulder injury.   Torrence could supplant rookie Patrick Robinson as the primary nickel back with the short-term loss of start Tracy Porter.

Panthers WR troubles: Already short star WR Steve Smith with an injury suffered against the Saints, the Panthers have cut USC WR Dwayne Jarrett, who was the target of Jimmy Clausen's final desperate pass on Sunday against the Saints.  Jarrett was arrested for his second DWI Monday night.

Without Smith and Jarrett, the Panthers will start rookies Brandon LaFell and David Gettis, with David Clowney being claimed off of waivers today.  We continue to be happy to be wrong with our 2007 Mock Draft prediction

Grant: Free agent DE Charles Grant has signed with the Chicago Bears, completing an inadvertent defensive end swap.  The Bears have yet to really replace starting defensive end Alex Brown, who was the Saints' big free agent addition of 2010.  As for Grant, who owns a Super Bowl XLIV ring, he's already been in and out of Miami since his release this past offseason from the Saints.

Practice Squad: The Saints have cycled QB Sean Canfield back on the practice squad, a week and a half after letting him go.  WR Adrian Arrington, cut to make room for RB DeShawn Wynn, also landed back on the Saints' practice squad.

Ex-Saints news: Former Saints MLB Marc Simoneau, part of the Donte Stallworth trade to Philadelphia, had a recent workout with the Chiefs... Former Nicholls State G Jacob Bender, a recent transient on the Saints' practice squad, has signed with the Hartford Colonials of the UFL... Former Saints draft pick DE/LB Rob Ninkovich starred for the Patriots on Monday night football.  The high-motor Ninkovich was a fifth round pick and preseason standout whose unfortunate knee injury aborted an otherwise promising rookie campaign in 2006.  He returned to the Saints after a stint with the Dolphins late in the 2008 season, and has bloomed into a starter with the Patriots and had two interceptions and a sack against Miami...
