Head coach Sean Payton's existing contract has been extended three years and no runs through the 2015 season, according to an announcement from the Saints today.
Payton is by far the most successful coach in team history. Aside from two division championships and a Super Bowl XLIV win, Payton has engineered five of the top ten best offenses in team history in terms of yards gained. The Saints were the number one offense in both points scored and yardage in 2008 and 2009, the only times in team history.
"I have been very fortunate with the ownership, front office and assistant coaches I have had here," Payton said in a press conference on Monday, part of the regular weekly media schedule.
Payton said that his contract and a new deal for QB Drew Brees were "two separate entities." The Saints are also deep into negotiations on Brees' new contract. Payton said he was confident that a deal would get done, though he isn't involved in negotiations.
Payton owns 49 career regular season wins, second only to Jim Mora's team-leading 93 wins over an 11-year career. But Payton's win percentage so far with the Saints is .613 to Mora's .557 with the Saints.
In a statement released to the media, Saints owner Tom Benson said “I am very pleased to announce this contract extension today for Sean that will run through the 2015 season. Our goal is to continue to build a TRADITION of winning here in New Orleans and Sean represents that tradition.”
