The Saints lost RB Joique Bell on Monday, when he was plucked off their practice squad to the 53-man active roster of the Detroit Lions, who are playoff bound for the first time since 1999.
After playing in only three preseason games but finishing 6th in exhibition rushing yards, Bell made the 53-man roster of the Saints this season. Bell had 124 total yards and was praised by Payton for playing well depsite not being 100% healthy in the preseason finale. Bell was waived in September when Will Smith returned from his Starcaps suspension.
Bell was himself plucked by the Saints off the practice squad of the Eagles near this time last season, when the team lost Pierre Thomas for the playoffs.
The Lions have clinched a playoff spot and will likely be the 5th seed unless the Falcons win the NFC South and the Saints take the 5th seed, bumping Detroit to the 6th seed. That scenario makes it unlikely the Saints and Lions will have a playoff rematch of their December 4 shootout, as the only possibility for a rematch would be in the NFC Championship game.
