Coaching Carousel Spins Around Saints

While the departure of defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is the highlight of the NFL's coaching exchange so far, the Saints organization could be affected in numerous ways during this offseason.

Sean Payton could be out his other offensive coordinator as well, as Pete Carmichael, Jr., the Saints' long time quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, has drawn interest from the Colts and Raiders.  Carmichael also called plays for most of this season.  He has drawn interest in the past two offseasons by other teams as is regarded as Payton's protege.

Conflicting reports indicated that Carmichael may or may not have already interviewed with the Raiders while the team was in the Bay Area this weekend.  The Saints have reportedly given that permission however.

The Saints already lost wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson, who took the head coaching job at Tulane.  With the Saints' season open, Johnson has left the Saints and taken up the job full time.  Saints scout Mike Neu, former coach of the New Orleans Voodoo, and offensive quality control coach Mike Smith will reportedly join Johnson at Tulane.

Current Saints offensive line coach Aaron Kromer was linked to the St. Louis head coaching job before it was given to Jeff Fisher, and has also been linked to the Indianapolis Colts, who cleared house.  Reports online indicate that the Rams were close to interviewing Kromer before Fisher accepted their offer.

Saints assistant defensive line coach Travis Jones has reportedly been linked to a vacancy on the coaching staff at the University of Tennessee.

Saints Director of College Scouting Rick Reiprish has also been linked to front office jobs with the St. Louis Rams, Indianapolis Colts.   The Colts hired Ryan Grigson to run their front office however.

Saints tight ends coach Terry Malone, influential in Jimmy Graham's ascendance to stardom, has drawn interest from the Chicago Bears in the past and was considered for the Tulane position as well.

Former Saints assistant coach Dennis Allen, who left in 2011 to be the defensive coordinator in Denver, was linked to the head coaching jobs in St. Louis and Oakland.

In addition to Allen, a host of men with Saints ties are linked to the Raiders job:

Former Ditka-era coach Tom Clements, now the quarterbacks coach for Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, is also considered a candidate in Oakland.  Mora-era Saints assistant Dom Capers, also with the Packers, is too.  Long-time Saints assistant coach during the Haslett era, Winston Moss, now an assistant with Green Bay, has been linked to the Raiders head coaching job.  The Raiders will also be looking at former Saint safety Darren Perry, also an assistant with the Packers.

In other Saints news, the Titans have hired former Saint safety Brett Maxie as their secondary coach.

Former Ditka-era Saints quarterback Doug Nussmeier has been hired as the offensive coordinator at the University of Alabama.
