One of the team's free agent additions of 2011 is the team's first re-signing of 2012.
Not including the exclusive-rights free agents or tagged QB Drew Brees, DE Turk McBride is the first Saint to voluntarily re-sign with a team that stands to lose many important free agents in the coming week.
McBride has reported signed a new one-year extension to his soon-to-expire deal and will not become a free agent on March 13.
McBride signed with the Saints in last July in the flurry of post-CBA acquisitions. An unrestricted free agent after the new CBA was signed, McBride was a restricted free agent under the old plan. The Lions had protected him with a second-round tender, one of the higher offers to RFA's.
The newcomer's presence, and the promise of 2011 first round pick Cameron Jordan, bumped veteran DE Alex Brown off the roster late in preseason.
McBride played in only eight games as a Saint in 2011, starting the first two games and collecting two sacks and a forced fumble in his first three games. McBride missed two games in late October with a shoulder injury. He returned to play against Tampa Bay but was lost to an ankle injury. He appeared in the regular season finale, but missed the playoffs.
With Jeff Charleston set to be a free agent, McBride could be the top rotation man at defensive end behind starters Will Smith and Jordan.
