Corey White, defensive back, Samford University
162nd overall selection, 28th pick in the 5th round
5'11 1/2", 206, 4.47 40
The Saints added youth and depth to the secondary, picking small-school defensive back Corey White near the end of the fifth round. Multisport athlete in high school played offense and defense on the football team, basketball and ran track in Dunwoody, Georgia.
At Samford in Birmingham, Alabama, White played cornerback, starting the past two seasons. A small-school invite to the scouting combine where he shined: a 4.47 40-yard dash and a blazing fast 6.72 three-cone drill. At his pro day, White ran a reported 4.39 40 yard dash.
Like Toon, White had a great vertical jump over 37". Like Hicks, White is raw with little pro-level preparation for the NFL.
Considered a safety prospect because he is a strong tackler and aggressive in run support, White played cornerback. He lacks the hip and foot movement needed for man coverage, a weakness that will either be fixed with coaching or overcome with a move to safety. Does not play with great football speed though his 40 yard dash numbers were attractive.
Tough and durable, White is raw and experienced only at a low level of collegiate competition. At Samford in the Southern Conference, White was covering FCS receivers and did not dominate. He has the athleticism and ball skills to be a good zone corner, but defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo doesn't favor a drop zone system. White will likely move to safety for the Saints.
At 162, a host of defensive linemen were available, including Cal DE Trevor Guyton, Boise State DT Billy Winn, Virginia DE Cam Johnson, and Troy Jonathan Massaquoi. NC State OLB Terrell Manning, Massoquoi, Notre Dame LB Darius Fleming and Boise State S George Iloka were four of the next five picks taken.
