The Saints suffered three notable injuries in their recent minicamp, an odd set of practices at the Saints' facility in which suspended head coach Sean Payton and unsigned franchise QB Drew Brees were absent.
Brees' backup, Chase Daniel, who has done a respectable job running the offense during OTA's and the minicamp, suffered a hairline thumb fracture in his throwing hand, having batted it on a helmet on Monday.
Daniel spoke to the media on Wednesday saying "Yes, the way I see it is that it’s a lot more of a sprain than a hairline fracture. When we saw the x-rays, there was a little bitty line right there, but literally it feels like a jammed thumb right now. The swelling has come down a lot. It’s getting better already and that’s a good thing."
He should be ready for training camp, but the Saints now will continue to work with 2010 seventh round pick Sean Canfield and free agent signee Luke McCown at quarterback, two players unlikely to see the field this fall.
Daniel wrote Wednesday on his twitter account, "Im not taking any time off. I’ll continue to do everything I do in the offseason to prepare myself for the upcoming season except throw."
Rookie third round pick Akiem Hicks suffered a broken right hand, a re-injury of the same problem he suffered during the team's rookie minicamp. He should be back at full strength for training camp.
More serious is the news to 2011 seventh round pick DE Greg Romeus, who was prepared to step up and contribute this year after rehabbing college injuries as a rookie. Romeus suffered an ACL and MCL tear in his left knee during the minicamp, setting up a long rehabilitation on the heels of completing recovery from a similar injury in his right knee.
The snake-bitten Romeus also recovered from a back injury from his senior year at Pitt, part of the reason why his high draft stock slid to the bottom of day three. The Saints will now look to Romeus for the 2013 season, with this year lost to a 6-8 month recovery period.
Interim head coach Joe Vitt feels for Romeus, commenting Wednesday that "this kid has really worked hard. The whole team feels bad for him, the coaching staff feels bad for him. It's part of the game. This kid has put in the time, he has put in the effort and he has to go through the whole process all over again. So we're going to be there for him and we're going to support him."
Prior to the minicamp, the Saints made the following moves:
Claimed WR Derek Moye off waivers from Miami.
Cut WR Malcolm Beyah, RB Chris Taylor, DT Mitch King.
The Saints waived recently-signed CB Nick Hixson.
Signed CB Elbert Mack (Tampa Bay) and QB Luke McCown to one-year deals.
Former Saints TE Tory Humphrey signed with the Raiders and former Saint T Pat McQuistan signed with the Cowboys.
