The Saints' four-game preseason schedule has been announced, including a nationally televised FOX game in Houston on August 25 against the Texans at 3pmCT.
In years past, the Saints and Texans have played each other regularly in the preseason, often holding joint practices before the game in the host city. Last year's Texans-Saints preseason game was a rare thriller, with a 24-24 halftime score on the way to a Saints victory, with Chase Daniel and Joe Morgan connecting on a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for the deciding points. Both Drew Brees and Matt Schaub were sharp in the first half of the game.
The Saints open the preseason at home against the Chiefs, the date TBA on the weekend of August 8-11, in the Kansas City debut of head coach Andy Reid.
The Saints then host the Raiders in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in week two of the preseason, the weekend of August 15-19. Oddly, this will be the first time the Saints and Raiders have played an exhibition in New Orleans, with the previous five preseason contests occurring in Oakland or London. Newly-acquired QB Matt Flynn, a BCS National Champion with LSU, is expected to lead the Raiders into the game.
The Saints head to Houston for the third preseason game, then close out the preseason Miami on the weekend of August 29-30. While the Saints-Texans matchup should see starters playing into the third quarter before being pulled, the final matchup in Miami will feature very few starters at all, with both sides starting backups. The final 53-man roster cutdown is just days later.
UPDATE: The regular season schedule is expected to be announced on April 18, with the season opener on Thursday, September 5.
The Saints' offseason workout program begins April 15. The Saints will hold OTA's starting May 21 through June 13, and have their one mandatory minicamp June 4-6.
