How much fun is this?
Have you ever tried to write up a mock draft? Really tried,
knowing that tens of thousands of monthly readers will be viewing
it?
Fun? Challenging? An entertaining exercise in NFL fandom, this
is not.
Frustrating? Sapping of volition? Emasculating? That's more
like it. The annual NFL Draft, our second favorite time of year
here at NOPF (behind only training camp) is a bittersweet season.
No team can really lose. All the real work is done by team-paid
professionals, whose job this is.
Well, mock draft prestidigitation isn't our job. It's a time-sapping,
cerebrally-draining effort that will invariably find disagreement,
dissension and disembowelment coming down from every angle of
public NFL fandom.
That being said, here's our fourth attempt. Read
our first attempt here, our
second attempt here, and our third
attempt here. Each version has a different take on the Saints'
thoughts with the board as it is, be sure to read up.

Meachem, Grubbs, Ross, have all passed through
this spot in previous mock drafts. Only Grubbs is available
in our fourth mock draft version, but with Harrell rising,
he's prime to get picked here as the only defensive tackle
worth taking at this spot.
Pretty clear the Saints want and need a cornerback, probably
two, in this draft. The top three prospects at the position,
Michigan's Leon Hall, Pitt's Darrelle Revis and Texas'
Aaron Ross, are the pick here if they are around. Fresno
State's Marcus McCauley and Arkansas' Chris Houston are
outside possibilities.
Read our earlier mock drafts
for why the Saints pass here on DT
DeMarcus Tyler and CB Chris
Houston. 1.0 2.0 3.0
The Saints could surprise us here, as many
late first round picks do, by plucking somebody with
a mid second round grade because they won't get to take
him late in the next round. Not something Loomis is prone
to, but he's not the only decision maker. We don't yet
know much about Payton's tendencies and Rick Mueller sticks
to the almighty board.
Harrell is a hoss - tough, strong, a solid team guy and
a captain of the Volunteers last season. If not for injuries
that limited his final season and parts of his entire career,
Harrell would be challenging Branch and Okoye for top DT
prospect status. For the Saints, Harrell would immediately
enter the rotation with Brian Young and Hollis Thomas,
extending both their careers and allowing the Saints constant
pressure and run strength across their rotation. Neither
Young nor Thomas are on the right side of 30, and inserting
young new talent at the position is a necessity, even if
the Saints desperately need cornerbacks.

Saints seven-round projection:
| 2nd Round: |
CB |
Fred Bennett |
South Carolina |
It's not a good draft for corners, and if the board falls
wrong the Saints won't be able to get good value in a cornerback.
Bennett is huge for a corner at almost 6'1, and has great man-up coverage
skills, which fits the Saints' scheme. Despite being relatively
experienced in the SEC Bennett lacks real sharp recognition
skills and isn't aggressive in run support.
|
| 3rd Round: |
CB |
Ramzee Robinson |
Alabama |
Tour around the SEC continues with a visit to Alabama,
where 5'9, 186 pound Robinson combines athleticism,
versatility and high character with a serious need for
pro coaching. Solid leader and character probably gets
a personal recommendation from former teammate Roman Harper.
|
| 4th Round: |
QB |
Troy Smith |
Ohio State |
| Smith carries some off-field baggage and entitlement
baggage, but otherwise sounds a lot like Brees did when
he was coming out of college. It took Brees years of coaching,
veteran influence and extra effort to overcome his physical
limitations. Smith is in store for the same, and Payton's
quarterback development history might be one of the better
places for Smith to land in the NFL.
|
| 4th Round: |
DE |
Dan Bazuin |
Central Michigan |
Owes much of his rating to teammate Joe Staley, who pulled
scouts to C-Mich from across the country. Bazuin is undersized
but is as hyperactive and overachieving as they come, smoking
the three-cone drill at the combine at 7.09, one of the fastest
for a lineman. At 6'3, 266 pounds, some time in an NFL weight
room could help him contend for a starting job in 2008.
|
| 4th Round: |
TE |
Derek Schouman |
Boise State |
In 2004 the Saints traded out of the third round to the
Redskins, who used the pick to select Chris Cooley. Here, the Saints
do their best to proxy one of the most versatile tight ends in the
league. One of Zabransky's more versatile targets, Schouman is a third
option behind Johnson and Campbell.
|
| 5th Round: |
WR |
Roy Hall |
Ohio State |
Massive development prospect at receiver who blew away
the scouts at his Pro Day, 6'3, 238 pound Hall is already
an experience special teamer who was fourth fiddle on the
Buckeye offense.
|
| 7th Round: |
G |
Uche Nwaneri |
Purdue |
| Tempermental interior lineman and former DT from Saints'
pipeline school is underrated and has scared off teams because of a fight
with a teammate that resulted in a semester-long suspension. But the
Saints have done their homework and milked this school in 2006, making
either Nwaneri or his linemate Mike Otto a likely second day pick. |
