A year of scouting is rewarded this weekend with the annual
NFL Draft. In the final two articles in a series produced exclusively
for NewOrleansProFootball.com, NFLDraftScout.com Senior Analyst
Rob Rang projects the Saints' picks for the First and Second
Days of the draft.
Rob's projection of the Saints' First Day picks follows.
Round 1. Pick #27 overall - Greg Olsen, TE, Miami:
The Saints' primary needs are on the defensive side of the
ball, but should the speedy Olsen fall to this point, the offensive-minded
Sean Payton may be too tempted not to pull the trigger. Olsen
appears to be slipping as the draft approaches, making it entirely
possible that the sure-handed and speedy seam threat is available
for the Saints here. Saints fans can only imagine the offensive
fireworks capable with New Orleans' already talented skill position
players having another year to acclimate to Sean Payton's system
and the addition of a legitimate seam threat in Olsen. Sean Payton
can imagine it, as well.
Round 2, Pick #58 overall - Jonathan Wade, CB, Tennessee:
Even with the addition of Jason David, the Saints would like
to add more depth at cornerback. Wade's raw athleticism makes
him one of the more sought after defensive backs in the draft.
With two established starters in front of him, Wade can be developed
for a season or two as a dime or nickel corner, before earning
a starting position.
Round 3, Pick #88 overall - Justin Durant, ILB, Hampton:
The addition of linebacker Brian Simmons lessens New Orleans'
need for linebackers, but doesn't eliminate it. Durant's level
of competition at Hampton is a concern for some, but his steady
play with at the East-West Shrine Game and solid performance
at the Combine have eased these worries.
Be sure to check here tomorrow for Rob's projections of who
the Saints might take in Rounds 4-7.
