Saints Step Up for First Victory

The New Orleans Saints came out firing after half-time to secure their first win of the season, 31-10 against the Houston Texans.

Quarterback Aaron Brooks was an efficient 18-of-27 passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns. And while the Saints offense broke out of their shell during the game, it was the Saints defense that stole the spotlight.

The Saints defense hurried Houston quarterback David Carr, 17-36 for 213 yards and a rushing touchdown, into several bad throws and sacked him five times while intercepting two of his passes. The Houston rushing attack could do no better, rushing for only 75 yards on 24 carries.

A week after losing starting right defensive end Darren Howard for 10-12 weeks his replacement, Willie Whitehead, stepped in a played a great game. Sacking Carr twice and recording eight tackles.

The Saints started the scoring in the first quarter on a 24-yard touchdown run by Deuce McAllister. Following the Saints touchdown the Texans offense scored 10 unanswered points to take the lead at half-time 10-7.

But coming out of the break, the New Orleans offense woke up from their six quarter nap and scored 17 points in the second half.

The Saints dominated the third quarter, holding the ball for 9:36 and scoring ten points on their two possesions in the quarter.

On the first drive of the second half the Saints drove the ball 64 yards in 4:10 and scored on a 35-yard pass from Brooks to Donte Stallworth. The play was made on a wonderful pump fake by Brooks, which got Stallworth wide open for the 35-yard score.

John Carney was able to connect on a 39-yard field goal on the Saints next possession to increase the lead to 17-10.

Following a Texans punt the Saints were abe to score for the third straight possession. This time on a two yard touchdown pass from Brooks to Ernie Conwell. Conwell's first touchdown as a Saint.

The final score of the day for the Saints on a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by New Orleans native Derrick Rodgers.

The Saints will now focus on next weeks opponent the Tennessee Titans. The Titans (1-1) will be coming off of a 33-7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
