Notes: Faine Out, Goodwin In: Starting center ruled out due to pectoral injury

Injury Report: A pectoral injury suffered by starting center Jeff Faine last week early in the Falcons game has thrust backup Jonathan Goodwin into the starting lineup.

Goodwin, a career backup who has been serviceable in spot duty as a sub guard and center. At 6'3, 318 points Goodwin brings more size to the position that Faine has excelled at using superior technique. A fifth round pick of the Jets in 2002 out of Michigan, Goodwin hasn't started a game since 2005 when he was a Jet. In two seasons with the Saints he has appeared in every game, starting none.

On the other hand, DT Brian Young returned to practice on Friday and is expected to start.

Payback: Saint starting TE Eric Johnson is returning to the city where he had spent his entire career. Johnson spent his career since 2001 with the 49ers before signing with the Saints in the offseason.

Similarly, WR Michael Lewis spent his entire, storied career with the Saints before being released by the team in the offseason. The 49ers, desperate for help and stability in the return game, signed Lewis on September 25.
