Saints down to 53 with decisions at kicker, return specialist

The Saints are down to 53.

That roster includes the winning of the kicking job, K Martin Gramatica, as the Saints chose not to keep two placekickers. Sixth round pick rookie K Taylor Melhaff is among those released.

Ex-LSU WR Skyler Green also is among the cut, having failed to win a return specialist job. The Saints instead decided to keep veteran Lance Moore, who will share return duties with Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas.

Green and Melhaff join 2007 third round pick G Andy Alleman, veterans DT Orien Harris, TE Buck Ortega, G Tim Duckworth, DE Josh Savage, and rookies LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar, RB Lynell Hamilton, LB William Kershaw, FB Olaniyi Sobomehein and WR Joe West.

QB Tyler Palko, who struggled mightily in the preseason finale, faced tough adversity anyway with the Saints' propensity to keep only two quarterbacks.

CB Greg Fassitt has been placed on injured reserve.

The Saints made the first half of these cuts yesterday.
