Notes: Saints Eliminated With Two Weeks To Go

Still a chance for a winning season in historically successful NFC South; former Saint Brock fired

Saints Out: For the third straight season, the Saints' postseason hopes have ended in Chicago. In 2006, they ended in the NFC Championship game. Last year, they ended with a mathematically-alive Saints losing in Chicago in Week 17. Now, in Week 15, the Saints are ruled out after a Thursday night loss in overtime to the Bears.

Each game has been a different affair, but the result the same. The Saints were outpunched in 2006 and outplayed in 2007. On Thursday, the Saints were outgunned, lacking defensive weapons to use against Devin Hester and the Bears offense.

Bush To Have MRI: Reggie Bush will have an MRI on his troubled left knee, the same knee that has already suffered partially torn ligaments and a torn meniscus in the past 12 months. Bush unhappily sat out of more than half of Thursday night's game.

Bush will be evaluated by Dr. James Andrews this week and may not play in the final two weeks of the season.

Marrone Gone: The Saints have allowed Doug Marrone, their former offensive line coach and running game coordinator, to leave the team early and committ to his new head coaching job at Syracuse University. Marrone, in a decision backed by Sean Payton, resigned from his Saints employment after the Saints' Thursday night game in Chicago.

Detroit Danger: The Lions lost to the Colts on Sunday in a close game that was tied with less than nine minutes to play. The 0-14 Lions host the Saints next week, providing an opportunity for the Saints to either prolong Detroit's suffering or grant an ignominious victory to the home town team.

Last year, the Saints provided the Rams their first victory deep into the season. A lackadaisical week of preparation could prove disastrous on Sunday in Detroit.

The 3-0 Saints similarly suffered an inexplicable loss in Detroit to the 0-3 Lions in 2002. The 1-15 1980 Saints got their own victory in the second-to-last week of the year, a 21-20 victory over the Jets in New York.

Notes: Drew Brees needs to average 376 yards in the final two games to match Dan Marino's 1984 single-season passing yardage record of 5084 yards... Former Saint OL Stan Brock has been fired as the head coach at West Point. The Black Knights were 3-9 in both of Brock's seasons as head coach of Army... Former Saint OT Willie Roaf was honored at halftime on Sunday by the Chiefs for his four seasons in Kansas City. Roaf retired in 2006...
