TE David Thomas added in trade from Patriots

TE David Thomas was added on cutdown day, arriving from New England in trade for a seventh round pick in 2011.

Thomas, a third round pick in 2006 out of Texas, is a fantastic receiving tight end and a good special teamer. He is an adequate blocker and in New England found himself squeezed out in a numbers game behind Ben Watson, Alex Smith and Chris Baker. The Eagles were also reportedly interested in Thomas.

He'll try to replace Billy Miller's role in the Saints' offense, as a dangerous receiver threat in two tight end formations. Thomas, out of Wolfforth, Texas, was Vince Young's go-to safety valve receiver and one of the best tight ends in school history.

Thomas missed most of the 2007 season with a foot injury.
