The Saints signed free agent guard Terrance Metcalf on Thursday.
Metcalf, a native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, was a third round pick of the Bears out of Ole Miss in 2002.
He played with the Bears through 2008 before landing in Detroit for one season, and now joins fellow ex-Bears Alex Brown and Jason McKie.
He was cut by the Lions after a stint in training camp of 2009 and does not count against the Saints' free agent restrictions because of the Final League Year rules.
Metcalf missed the 2008 season with a suspension for violating the league's drug policy. He was expected to enter the 2008 season as a starting left guard, but a knee injury slowed him in training camp before his suspension.
The Saints waived undrafted rookie free agent G Joe Tonga to make room for Metcalf.
