Loomis: Robinson holdout should be short-lived

"I think that talks are going well," Saints GM Mickey Loomis told the media today at the start of training camp press conference, in reference to negotiations for the contract of first round pick CB Patrick Robinson.

"I think we’re close and I would be surprised if it’s not done before the weekend’s out, hopefully sooner than that," Loomis later said.  Loomis and Khai Harley are the chief negotiators for the Saints.

Payton added, "I do think the time he spent during the offseason program and the minicamps he’s been involved with, the OTAs, he’s got a pretty good grasp. We’ve worked him, not only outside, but in the nickel as well.  I think, just from the conversations I’ve had with Mickey, and I had a chance to hear Mickey’s response, I think it’s fairly common [that the first pick holds out], as we sit here in the first press conference.  I think we will see him sooner than later."

Robinson and fellow draft pick C Matt Tennant are not at camp.   Robinson is officially a holdout, as the Saints had meetings today.  The team put players through a conditioning test yesterday.

Tennant has been excused because of the death of his mother. The NOPF staff sends its condolences to Tennant and his family, our thoughts are with him.
