RB PJ Hill suffered a torn triceps muscle on a run late in the Saints' exhibition victory over the Texans on Saturday night. He'll be placed on injured reserve and lost for the season.
To replace him in the maelstrom that has become the backup runningback depth chart, the Saints added free agent RB Deshawn Wynn.
Hill appeared to lose ground in the third runningback job on Saturday night even before the injury. Undrafted rookie RB Chris Ivory from Tiffin University was a load to tackle and showed some bounce and ability to get outside the tackles.
In his second training camp with the Saints, the former Wisconsin star spent the first two months of the 2009 season on the Saints' practice squad before signing in Philadelphia. But Hill was waived by the Eagles in December and ended up with the Redskins, where he finished the season, but was waived in May. The Saints claimed Hill on waivers on May 4, 2010.
Wynn's signing was announced by his agency on Twitter here.
A former seventh round pick of the Packers out of the University of Florida, Wynn, 26, saw significant action as a rookie. In four starts over seven games, he rushed 50 times for 203 yards and four touchdowns and caught nine passes for 73 yards.
Since 2007 Wynn hasn't started any games and has played in only nine, collecting 14 carries. He missed half his rookie season with a shoulder injury after nearly not making the team because of a virus and a quad injury.
An ankle injury and a concussion would sink his chances in training camp 2008, but he was signed to the practice squad and then the regular season roster. He returned in 2008 with a few highlights, including a 73-yard touchdown - that accounted for most of his 110 rushing yards on the season. A calf injury would the limit him late in 2008.
In 2009, he was touted to be in his best shape even, but a October knee injury would put him on injured reserve, sinking once high hopes.
At 5'10, 230 pounds, Wynn fits the mold of the bigger back the Saints have been craving as a compliment to Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. He has been wracked by injuries since 2007, and having lost patience with him Wynn was not tendered as a restricted free agent by the Packers. Injury issues combined with weight management problems sunk his Packers career.
Wynn found attention in Seattle, the Giants and Cincinnati this offseason but did not sign.
