Saints in middle of 11-day layoff

The New Orleans Saints opened the season on a Thursday night and play their second game on a Monday night in San Francisco.

The team is in a rare, extended break between games.  It will have been 11 days between the Saints' first two games.

The last time the Saints had a break longer than 11 days that did not involve a bye week was this month in 2001, when week two was moved because of the attacks of September 11.  The Saints had a bye in week three, and ended up waiting 21 days between weeks one and two.

The Saints won their opener on September 9 but lost their next game, an emotional return to NFL in New York, to the Giants 21-13 on September 30.

The Saints have had 10 day breaks between games without a bye in 2007 and 2008.

New Orleans lost both ends of that break in 2007, to the Colts on a Thursday night regular season opener and then to the Bucs at home.

In 2008, the Saints split games with the Bears (loss in overtime) on a Thursday night and Lions (blowout win) on either side of their late-season 10-day break.

Notes: 49ers speedster Ted Ginn will miss the Monday night game against the Saints with an MCL sprain... Former Saints WR Larry Beavers, an undrafted rookie speedster who returned a preseason kickoff for a touchdown against New England, has signed with the CFL's BC Lions... Former Saints DE Bobby McCray worked out for the Houston Texans today, though the team signed veteran ends Ryan Denney and Adewale Ogunleye instead... Undrafted rookie G Brandon Carter has been signed to the Bucs' practice squad after being released from the Saints' practice squad.  Teams around the NFL cycle their practice squad weekly if not daily.  The Saints have replaced Carter with former Nicholls State G Jacob Bender...
