Once again, as was happened late last season, the Saints secondary has been hit by injury.
Saints cornerback Tracy Porter is out 2-4 weeks with an MCL sprain, and backup safety Chris Reis has been lost for the season with a major shoulder injury.
Porter's injury is a similar sprain to the injury that kept him out four games over weeks 11-14 of the 2009 season and he's expected to make a full recovery.
Chris Reis' shoulder injury came when he was receiving significant playing time on defense because of injuries to Roman Harper last week and Pierson Prioleau during the Panthers game. But his loss will impact the special teams more heavily, where Reis was a specialist and a leader on coverage teams.
In Porter's place, Randall Gay is expected to fill in with rookie Patrick Robinson also moving up the depth chart. The Saints released veteran Leigh Torrence last week, but may re-sign him given the sudden lack of depth.
The Saints will work out free agent safeties this week with injuries to Harper, Prioleau and Reis. Usama Young was the fill-in after Prioleau and Reis went down in game, and Gay would have been next in line to fill in.
