Brees to sit, Daniel banged up, Canfield to play full game

Head Coach Sean Payton announced that second year southpaw QB Sean Canfield will start and is expected to play the entire game on Thursday night in the Superdome against the Titans.

Drew Brees will sit, and with primary backup Chase Daniel resting a banged-up thumb, Sean Payton will throw a bone to Canfield, who was the Saints' 7th round pick in 2010 and has been through two training camps.

Canfield spent the 2010 season on the Saints' practice squad, and was elevated to the 53-man squad for the Saints' Thanksgiving Day game against the Cowboys.

Canfield is 6 of 12 for 82 passing yards so far this preseason, attempting passes in each game.  One of those incompletions was a drop by rookie WR Joe West.  He appeared in only one game in preseason 2010, attempting no passes, and was cut before the preseason finale, one year ago tomorrow.

At 6'4, 223, Canfield, 24, towers above the other two quarterbacks on the Saints' roster, both listed at 6'0".

Saint starters who have not played much in the preseason will intentionally get some snaps in the preseason finale, according to Payton.  CB Tracy Porter, SS Roman Harper, RDE Will Smith and LG Carl Nicks were named by Payton.

Meanwhile, LDE Cameron Jordan and PK Garrett Hartley remain absent from practice with injury.  Payton stated Tuesday that he did not need to make an injury report until Monday, and that he wouldn't give details.  With the questionable health of Jeff Charleston, the release of Alex Brown, and the potential suspension of starter Will Smith, the absence of Jordan remains worrisome.
