Backups To Star In Tennessee

Not a single starter on the offense will play tonight in Tennessee in the Saints' preseason finale, and even  second stringers will be rare.  Both quarterbacks who will make the final 53, Drew Brees and Chase Daniel, will not play barring an injury to Sean Canfield, who will apparently start and play the entire game.  He'll be throwing to backups Joe Morgan and Courtney Roby and handing off to starting RB Chris Ivory.

Ivory is the highest profile player that will be seen on offense tonight, and his competition in undrafted rookie Travaris Cadet will play a lot too. Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram are not expected to play, according to the Saints' official website.

On defense, a handful of starters will see action, including DE Will Smith (suspended at the start of the season), DT Brodrick Bunkley (who has struggled this preseason), LB Scott Shanle (who has excelled this preseason).  Newly-acquired Barrett Ruud and Jonathan Casillas are expected to start, with Casillas sliding back to outside linebacker after a tough outing at middle linebacker last week.

Rookie draft picks RT Marcel Jones and CB Corey White are slated to start, and third round pick DT Akiem Hicks is expected to play.

Except for backup center/guard Matt Tennant, none of the starting offensive linemen tonight are locks to make the team: LT Charles Brown, LG Eric Olsen, RG DeOn'tae Pannell and Jones.

DE Junior Galette is expected to start at left defensive end, next to Bunkley, Tom Johnson and Will Smith.  Starters Sedrick Ellis and preseason star DE Cam Jordan are not expected to play.

The Saints top three receivers, Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Lance Moore are not expected to play, along with injured receivers Andy Tanner and Adrian Arrington.

The Saints must cut their roster of 75 down to 53 by Friday night at 8pm CST.
