Chase Daniel's four year journey through the NFL has returned him back to the state of Missouri. The former Saints backup quarterback has signed a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, ostensibly to back up Alex Smith.
A highly productive but undersized quarterback out of the University of Missouri in 2009, Daniel went to camp with the Redskins but was cut after preseason. He was with the Saints practice squad in 2009 and was the backup to Brees midway into 2009 through 2012, playing sparsely but learning from the best, and starring in preseason games.
Daniel was one of many 2012 Saints to become a free agent at 3pm today, and was signed by the Chiefs an hour into the new league year.
Drew Brees is the only quarterback currently on the Saints' roster. Sean Canfield went to camp with the Saints in 2012, but played poorly in preseason and was cut at the end of August. Canfield remains a free agent. The Saints will likely to go into training camp with at least three, likely four quarterbacks.
UPDATE: Daniel reportedly received a three year, $10 million contract with up to $5 million in guarantees. He played for $1 million as Brees' backup in 2012.
